2006 Zong 200 gy tires?

Hi there, I was wondering if someone could point me towards a sticky regarding knobbies or give me some links on places to buy. The 15'' rear seams a little hard to shop for.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

The only DOT knobby rear tire I am aware of that fits the Zongshen 200GY-2 is the Kingstone 130/90-15, available only from Zongshen. Zongshen America is currently out of stock, but I will post a thread when I hear the DOT knobby tires have arrived.

Thank you, another question.... is there a sticky or thread on swapping the rear wheel for a larger one?

I am not aware of such a thread; however, the thought has certainly crossed my mind. I am currently considering lacing an 18" rim to the Zongshen rear hub. There are plenty of choices available in 18" DOT knobby tires.

Spud, In all you comparison of the tw200 to the zong is it a possibility of using a tw rear wheel? I think there is more of a tire selection for those.

That is an excellent question, Allen.

The TW200 rear tire is a 180/80-14; this tire size presents two problems for the Zongshen 200GY-2. The first problem is the rim size; the Zong has a 15-inch rear wheel. The second problem is the width; the 180mm TW200 tire is too wide, and it will rub the drive chain.

If you spend a significant amount of time and money you can convert the Zong to a TW200 rear wheel. However, this involves replacing the shorter Zong countershaft, and attaching a TW200 swingarm. You must also machine the Zong left crankcase cover to accept the bearing that supports the longer TW200 countershaft, or you must buy and install a TW200 left crankcase cover. A member of this forum, madbare, is currently making this conversion and reporting the results in a thread over at the TW200 forum.

http://tw200forum.com/forums/1/61689...ost.aspx#61689

Personally, I would look for a good deal on a used TW200 before I went this route. However, this is a fun, fascinating project to watch, and I wish madbare the best of success.

Rather than do the TW200 conversion, I would personally choose to do one of two less expensive options. The Kingstone 130/90-15 is the only DOT knobby tire that currently fits the Zong rear wheel. However, it is a very nice tire. It wears very well on the street, and it grips very well in the dirt. Rubber tires do not deteriorate in storage. Therefore, if you can afford it, you can stock up with three or four of these tires when they are available.

The second option is to lace an 18-inch rim to the Zongshen rear hub. With an 18-inch rear wheel the Zong owner will have a very large selection of fine rubber to choose from.

I think I might do both of these options. Using the original rim, I could retain the supermoto look and great street tire selection afforded by the 15-inch rear wheel. At the same time I could swap in the 18-inch rim when desired, and experiment with the large DOT knobby tire selection.

I thought about the width after I posted that. The 18" rim would give the most choices, but is it to tall for the swingarm?

this may be a sort of non-issue from what i can tell this was a shortage that shouldnt happen again if the tires are of quality and reasonable price i wouldnt worry about changing rims, but then so many chinese parts change over hummm,,,,

I don't believe the 18" rim would be too tall for the swingarm. A lot of space is available between the rear axle and the rear fender.

Well, I am glad to hear the present shortage is unusual. Indeed, I consider the Kingstone DOT knobby tires to be of very good quality, at a competitive price.
