If it's a sealed gel cell then it should be fine. If it's a liquid acid, then you're flirting with disaster. Basically if it has vents, then it needs to be upright.

This is about the best picture I have of mine that I can find right now.

I moved the battery from the right side to across the frame under the seat just in front of the rear fender.Had to git rid of the leaky stock air filter box.

I just welded up some brackets for the battery but it is tight.
I also tucked in all the other electrical stuff sticking out on the sides and made side panels so the bike is now narrow and comfortable to stand on when trail riding it.

If you remove the airbox, won't rain water get into the intake?

Rain could get in there but I dont ride to much in the rain only when caught and I also have the sock that goes over the filter which might help a tiny bit.

I wouldnt want a smaller battery on ours but if it works for you then great.

I completely removed my battery last year and just don't use the elec. start. Not sure what they were thinking the way they mounted those batteries

I bet domestic china don't have electric starter and battery. It was probably added as an afterthought for us lazy Americans, who whines about everything.
