I've been lurking about here and decided it was time to sign up and say hello

I just ordered 3 gy-5's so my boys and I can cruise the logging roads here on Prince of Wales Island (SE Alaska) We are really hoping that the bikes will be good enought to get us to some of the good hunting and fishing spots that the roads have been blocked to 4 wheel drive vehicles.

I know already these bikes will not take harsh abuse but I do hope they will hold up to some moderate log'n road rides.
I've been riding for over 35 yrs and spin'n wrenchs for almost as long so I think I'm ready for some of whats to come, but I sure I'll be here asking questions and I hope I will have a few tips to post later on.

You mean they won't allow 4-wheelers on the island ?

BTW, thank you for Sarah -- we love her -- she's like a young puppy, all the old lazy big dogs are sitting up and taking notice that there's a new sherriff in town!

They do allow 4wheelers here

What I was talking about are Kelly bumps, part of the road is dug up with a trackhoe so that 4 wheel drive trucks, jeeps and ect. can not get past. The forest service does this and they are pretty wise as where to put and build them so as you can not get past :(
The other thing I'm looking forward to better gas milage as gas here is $4.60 a gal :(
And it will be fun teaching the boys how to ride dirt bikes

and riding with them 8)

welcome,

there was a fellow here screen name "mountain wolf". he built his bikes to go into the roughlands of idaho. you might try searching for his setup. If I remember correctly he built his bike to have a top speed of 35 mph and it could climb hills really well.

Might help you out some.

Welcome.

I think the bikes will be fine. Just don't jump them. Also you may want to gear the GY5 model down some. The stock 17/46 may be alittle to high for mostly offroad use.
