X-pect chugs after fueling

So this is only the 2nd time I've filled the tank, and I tried to top it off pretty high. Can it go too high?



Immediately after pulling away from the pump, it started to stall. It seems to idle evenly but if I give it any gas, it bogs down and it barely got me home. Starts right back up after it dies.


When I got home finally and parked, there was gas leaking from the rear left side, dripping right on about the middle of the chain, well rear of the fuel tank. It's coming from a spot under the seat about where the battery would be. Seems to stop (slowly) after shutting off the engine. Not leaking from the cap at all.


What'd I do??? I'll try pulling some gas out after it cools off but in the meantime, anyone got an explanation?

So is this a brand new X-pect or a used one you just got? Who did you buy it from, private seller, local dealer or online?

Pull the side covers and take a look at the fuel injector/throttle body area. Perhaps an air leak or the injector not fully in, or (most likely IMO) fuel line not fully secured? Just guessing here, based on your description.

The fuel tank cap on the Storm and the TBR7 BOTH leak if "overfilled" so leave it an inch under "FULL"

But this does not explain your engine fail. I can't explain it. Too much pressure should not affect the float bowl height at all.

I would think if there were any issues with fuel pressure the CEL would be on.

Not sure its relevant to your bike, but in case it is similar, the Titan has a plastic screw on cap with a plastic tube out the center (dirt bike style) and when new i ran into a similar issue and it turned out that the air release valve was the culprit, i removed it and it was resolved

I bought it brand new from Venom. It has 300 miles on it.



This happened immediately upon filling the tank. I was suspecting bad gas but I've never had trouble from that station, and then found the drip when I got home. Pretty sure it had never dripped before. The drip came from a spot immediately in front of the toolbox.


No CEL, at least not yet. Only drove it about a mile after filling up.

Tank overflow tube. I'm a motorcycle mechanic by trade. Under the fuel cap there's a rainwater drain that leads to a metal tube ran inside the tank, exiting out a barbed connection at the back of the tank and into a black hose which dumps out on the ground. If you overfill you'll get fuel into said drain.

Well OK, so excess gas drains out of the tube. How does this relate to his drivability problems?

Yes, EFI always pours gas out when you overfill a tank.

Ok so I didn't take any gas out, I just let it cool over dinner and went out and tried starting it again. Ran fine! Didn't drip. I took it up and down the block a few times, no trouble.


I'm ascribing the chugging to fueling it up because that's the thing I did immediately before the chugging. However, I haven't done anything to fix it but let it cool off. So could the problem just have been overheating? It was a pretty hot day, and the air guides aren't on the bike. But I mean, I wasn't pushing the bike and it was like 95 degrees out, which is common lately.

What weight or motor oil are you using? I'd go with 20w50 for hot weather, then switch to 10w40 for cooler temps.

Glad it seems to have sorted itself out. So I guess we need to leave an inch or two from the top when filling. I generally fill to the bottom of the filler neck in the tank.

Yes, these gas caps can leak... But I am referring to the chug chug issue. Simply overfilling the fuel tank has no effect on a carbed engine (other than the fuel spill which is dangerous for both!).

I am just saying. EFI does weird stuff. And this is yet another mysterious EFI glitch.

When I got my X-pect near 2 years ago I remember reading in one of the Lifan postings to beware of overfilling the gas tank as it lead to problems. the warning was do not fill up to the brim.
