xipect rear drum brakes

Does anyone know if the rear drum brake shoes are self alighning or do they need to be adjusted for best performance. I feel that the rear brakes are not sharp enough and am wondering why.

They need to be periodically adjusted.

Are we talking about adjusting the linkage to the lever operating the cam or adjusting the other side of the brake shoes, if so the rear wheel would have to come off as, I see

Sorry post #3 did not post the whole text : I see no means of adjusting the shoes from the outside.

It's the rod that is actuated by the rear brake pedal. Turning it in increases the tension, thus takes up some of the freeplay on the lever, tightening the brake shoes up. There is no internal adjustment.

The brakes are well adjusted however do not feel sharp enough so wonder what percentage of the shoe surface actually gets to contact the drum. Maybe with just 400 odd miles on the clock they will wear in before they wear out.

If you're concerned with the stopping power, you could always find an old school shop where they can arc the brakes. Not many people do that any more, but that's about all that will make them much better.
