New Jersey bikes

Hello, I live in NJ and am interested in buying a Hawk 250 or similar. I am concerned with what will be able to be registered in my state. It looks like by the list you guys have that NJ is possible, but all of the online dealers say NO!

https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/vehi...ufacturers.pdf RPS / Haosen is not on this list, nor are VINs beginning with L0W

The TaoTao TBR7 (vin L9N) looks possible but I don't prefer the styling of that bike, albeit similar.

I am looking for someone from NJ to chime in with their personal experience.

I'm very familiar with the VT route, but would prefer a bike reg in my home state.

Sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too...

The HAWK has never been a "road legal bike"... even with all it's "bells and whistles" (lights and horn) most states will try and keep it an "off road bike" thanks to the EPA and VIN number... a lot of people found a "loop hole" in their state to get their HAWK 250 plated... but most places have caught on by now from the looks of it

Maybe one of the Bashan 250s or the Apollo 250 (delux) will be to your liking (other than the slightly higher price), I think most of those bikes are 49 state road legal

The list of states that accept it has NJ, but I can't find anyone to attest that they've successfully done it on the forum. Where would this information have come from?

JerryHawk250 started the following thread back in December of 2016, and it did list the Hawk as being successfully registered in NJ sometime after the thread was started. Read through and see if anyone posted specifics. I personally recall a member or two posting on other threads as having success in NJ, but apparently in the last year or so they caught on as the Hawk really is certified as an 'offroad motorcycle' according to the federal EPA. Sure there are states that plate dirtbikes with a minimum of street equipment, including NJ at some point recently, but that loophole is probably closed now.

We had a couple of members that were successful registering in NJ. That was a few years back. It's possible that NJ rules have changed since then. Only way to know for sure is to contact your DMV.

I think I know that. Lol but yes that one would be a better choice to avoid registration issues.

Hello, I'm new to this so hopefully I'm posting this correctly. I live in NJ as well and was considering getting a toa
Dbr7 but was afraid of having reg. issues. I did find this link on YouTube of someone going through the process.

The Tao is 49 state certified (Californians need not apply) and should be on the NJ list. I copied this from the link to NJ's list posted above showing the first three characters of the VIN== WMI:L9N TAOTAO Group Co., LTD. and I copied this sample VIN from the EPA/DOT certification list for authorized 'on-highway motorcycles' L9NLARXA5H1000001. It clearly shows the first three characters as L9N which was listed on the NJ approved motorcycles list, so can't get much more assurance than that!

I caught that in the video. "Street legal in all states". I guess CA isn't a state. ;-)
