Jet's Hawk 250

Hello all, I've been viewing these forums for about 4 months and finally bought myself a hawk 250. I bought a used one for $750 w/ 2400km and will make up the rest to the 1500 retail price in mods and parts. I will be using this thread for individuals seeking guidance and ideas. Currently the bike has a cracked tank (did not know at purchase), Neutral light does not work, and the fuel gauge does not work. I am currently dissembling the bike and making changes. I have painted all the fairings and am working to fix the tank.

I've read a few threads about the tank issue and mine is cracked at the bottom by the mounting point above the carb. Its going to be about a 4 week process of updating and upgrading the bike.

Planned mods:
Paint - Fairings/wheels/other parts - done
Exhaust - done
New Tach cluster (I hope matt has some left next week) - done
New shift lever - done
Conversion to full LED lighting - done
Spark plug/line - Done
Tires - Shinko 705's
Grips - done
Protaper bar pad - done
New taillights and fab'd license plate bracket - done
Fab'd skid plate
New Mukini 30mm carb and jets - done
new 16T/44T sprockets with chain - done
side mirrors - done
seat mod - thanks motocheez
burrito tube
possible new air box - prev owner screwed it all up
gold hand levers - iffy about this one

I hope you guys chime in on issues and provide info, I WILL BE SURE TO SEARCH THE FORUM BEFORE ASKING, IF I DO IT WILL BE DIRECTED HERE.

Here's the tank crack , any suggestions, I saw some JB weld and derivatives mentioned, I was thinking of soldering and using an epoxy.

Here's the tank float if anyone wanted to see it, those notches seem to be what limits it's movement, and with further inspection, I see that it only goes up to half the hieght of the tank. I think this may be why we get irregular readings on fuel level.

I bet the soldering would work nicely. Using lots of that Flux stuff I don't see why it wouldnt draw it in to the Crack and seal it nicely. First time I seen the send unit, thanks for pics!

I didn't even use a license plate bracket, just drilled holes and mounted it to the plastic

I plan on getting rid of the entire tail light and housing, and mount one of these:

when I said I wanted to fab on, I meant the mounting bracket for the tail light! haha

Also, I think the flux will fix it, but I would hate to do that and then paint it and it crack again.... idk maybe a combo of flux and epoxy??

Well certainly worth a try and definitely run it with primer and prove it before final paint. I don't have experience with just saying. Hard to see on pics but chance it may leak later from the flexing. thats probably was the reason it failed in the 1st place, point of stress or inferior production. Good luck. I used the steel stick from jb to fix mine after getting it welded. So far so good. Did get a new tank sent from powersportsmax under warranty. I am going to see if my repair holds before I switch it.

Does anyone know what kind of material the tank is made from?? Steel, Aluminum??

Thanks guys, I'm going to weld it then, I got a buddy with a welding set. I'll post up the pics. I'll probably reinforce the welds at the bottom, and the crack itself.

Be careful man, those tanks can be nasty if they have an residual gas left.

Got it all fixed and no leaks! So my buddies dad has been fabricating and building beautiful cars for 25 years. Here's some tips he gave me I thought I'd pass on. He said, before welding a gas tank, be sure to fill it up with water all the way to the top, no matter how old the tank is or how long it's been sitting, this is due to the gasoline residue igniting from the arch from the welder. I had my hand on the tank when he was welding and I could feel it rumbling! It was the gasoline igniting, if you didn't fill it with water it would explode, no joke. Glad I didn't do it by myself. Just an FYI for you weekend warriors, I'm sure many of you knew that already!

Has anyone had experience putting new handle bar grips on their hawk? If so is the 7/8in fitment?

I'm fixing to buy some pro taper pillow top grips.
