Teaser: 'Ride Report'

Check back here later for a 'Ride Report' of the flight Linda and I took to Southern California last week. We just got home last night. 2,000 safe enjoyable miles in the Maule :P .

We had GREAT weather except the HWFH (Head Wind From Hell) on the way down. The wind was on our nose at 30-50 MPH. That's a lot when the plane only does 135. Looking down at the highways I think I say a Prius pass us.... We stopped on the way down in Cedarville, CA (don't bother going there... not the 'pretty' kind of desert. Deserted is more like it ) and Burns, OR (nice people. Makes most small towns look like NYC), and Reno, NV. We stopped at the Million-Aire Jet Center and received the red carpet treatment. Great fun. :P

Indeed we received the red carpet treatment everywhere we travelled, from the San Francisco Bay Area to the tiny airports along the way.

We visited my buddy Terry in the Sierra Mountains. His 'cabin' (a model of The Ponderosa from the TV show Bonanza) sits at 6,000 feet.

From there we went to San Luis Obisbo and then the South Central California Coast at Pismo Beach. There we rode ATV's on the beach and sand dunes. This is the area I thought I'd move to and even had a job offer...

We spent a few more days on the coastline there hiking and biking and exploring the wineries, the Big Sur Coastline, visiting people, and just relaxing.

On the way back we flew the coast to Monterey, and then to San Francisco. What challenging airspace! I did well because I stay proficient and that's where I trained. I even visited my flight instructor from way back  .

The roads in the Bay Area were just as congested as the skies. I drove us in the rented Yaris up to the Marin Headlands to Muir Woods. She wanted to see the giant redwoods.

From there up to Stinson Beach and then down (through a traffic jam on the 101) over the Golden Gate Bridge (BEAUTIFUL!!) to San Francisco!

We Cruised North Beach, the Financial District, The Castro, The Haight, and then to Chinatown for dinner. There we shared a table with a couple from Washington (DC) and a couple from Scotland. Great fun.

From there we flew back home via Lake Almanor, CA (AMAZINGLY beautiful), Lakeview, OR, and then John Day, Oregon and then home.

God blessed us with a safe trip and clear skies and unlimited visibility the whole ride. Except for the HWFH day (8 hours... ) the ride was Cadillac smooth also .

On downwind for landing at Chester, CA on Lake Amanor. This place was so beautiful. Turns out they need a doctor. It also turns out it goes below zero there and they get 30 feet of snow a year. It's at 4,600 feet in the Sierra Mountains...

Mt. Lassen, CA. I've summited this volcano, twice :P .

Lake Oroville, CA

In traffic on the 101 South into SF. I was greatly stressed by driving in the city. I don't miss that.

The Mairin Headlands at Muir Beach.

A Bannana slug. :?

God's handiwork. Giant 300 foot redwood trees at Muir Woods.

FastDoc and Miss Linda in Muir Woods.

Flying SF airspace towards Moffet Field, a GIANT NASA base.

Over Monterey Bay. This is where John Denver augered it in... :(

Pebble Beach Golf Course.

Higway One on the Big Sur Coastline. I must have ridden this 20 times on various motorcycles over the years. I know Heaven will be even nicer than this but I can't imagine what God could improve...

Miss Linda on a borrowed (airport) bicycle in Chester. We rode bikes to lunch in town. Wonderful!

Morro Rock from 2,000 feet.

Pismo Beach. Wow.

On our hotel room's balcony.

Does anyone STILL wonder why I always miss California?????

Beautiful girl.

On a hike on Bear Mountain on the Big Sur Coastline in the Ventana Wilderness.

More Highway One.

At Jagged Point.

Help lifeguard! I need mouth to mouth!

FastDoc on an ATV on Pismo Beach. 8)

Miss Linda. She got the hang of the manual transmission real quick. :P

Avilla Beach, and the beautiful Miss Linda.

This bird was a riot .

Sea lions.

Grover Beach.

12,500 feet over the clouds over the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At times like this it's good to have faith in God.

Lake Tahoe airport

How great Thou art!

Final approach into Reno, NV

This is what a 40 MPH headwind looks like at ground level. Note the blowing dust in Cedarville, CA.

Wow! I've driven highway 1 from SF to LA, but I've never seen it from the air. Thanks for the amazing pics! Miss Linda looks to be having a great time.

Thanks for posting all the beautiful photos, Doc!

I used to fly an ultralight, powered hang glider. This particular aircraft had a cruising speed of 52 mph, and I would frequently encounter headwinds of 25 mph, which reduced my ground speed to 27 mph! 8O However, I could still travel in a straight line, unimpeded by traffic, and obstacles on the ground. Also, I thought I was really speeding along at 78 mph, ground speed, when I headed back to the airport with a tailwind!

She's a good gal :P .

She was a good sport on the ride down against that miserable headwind.

We got tossed around a fair amount. Nothing dangerous but uncomfortable and she never complained. Plus the wind made for some long legs between stops. Once, at Cedarville, there was no fuel or bathroom and she had to go behind a hanger. She never complained about that either.

She's a good gal.
