Exactly what I was thinking. I suspect there's a jumper or dip switch on the circuit board. If it's cheap enough (and it's pretty much useless the way it is), perhaps you'd care to cut it open and see. You could always epoxy it back together after.

I needed to configure my Trail Tech Vapor computer to get the proper tachometer reading. I know you must also choose the correct setting for the Tiny Tach units.

Guess you get what you pay for. It was no JTSprocket... but the cheapest one I found on fleabay. I too was a little surprised. Not so much for the burrs on the teeth, but that the splines didn't fit at first. It wouldn't go on. I had to file the rough castings there to get it to fit properly.

It's not a name brand 'Tiny Tach'... but a cheap Tach/Hour meter.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Waterpro...item3ce1aff184
and I'd be surprised if there was any dip switch or otherwise inside. I'll have to try it out on a few other engines.

What RPM do these 200cc OHV engines idle at?
And what RPM are they near when they sound "wound out"?

Cheers!

I can only guess, since my stock tach was a big, fat liar. Perhaps around 1200rpm or so at idle, but I'd rather idle it down a bit more, as long as it will still start easily. Wound out, my guess is under 8 grand.

Thanks for the RPM #s. That help me confirm my suspicion that my tach is in fact reading half normal RPMs. I'm seeing 650 idle and 4000 "wound out". Why would it read halves? Would it be expecting a wasted spark? It says for use on any 4-stroke engine. Odd... a Chinese tach doesn't work on a Chinese engine... haha.

Got a little more ride time on my 17T sprocket and still diggin' it. I took out my GPS again. Guess my speedo has loosened up. It's actually reading pretty close now... only a few mph low across the board. I was able to reach 60mph... and probably had a few more left in it... but not the road to find them. Interestingly, it maxed 59mph with the 15/46 combo. I think I wound it out more on that 59mph run and the engine was running leaner too. Oh well... 60 is fine for my needs.

Cheers!

Universal 2-in-1 (volt/ rpm) http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=15274249845 are more useful
Some chinese bike are using option 1 [8.33Hz]

My guess is that it's designed for a twin, and the seller doesn't understand that.

Not sure about the meter... perhaps a defective one? I've contacted the seller.

I wrapped it around my car's (4 cylinder) #1 spark plug wire. It read exactly 1/2 of true RPMs as indicated by my cars tachometer. So... guess it's wrong.

Cheers!

You can purchase two versions. 1 version for a spark on every revolution and 1 version for 2 sparks on every revolution. I have one that looks just like yours on my Honda clone 125cc and it works perfectly.

Interesting. The ebay ad did not mention anything about different versions... only that it works on all 4 cylinder engines.

So which do I have... and which one do I need?

I am guessing you need 1 spark per revolution version.

Can you tell me exactly how you had yours installed? I do know you want 3-5 wraps of the inductive wire near the spark plug. Not on the other end near the coil.

Did you possibly get a 2 stroke one? There is a 4 stroke and 2 stroke version as well.

I would have thought our CDIs were wasted spark... firing every time the piston came to the top... once per revolution... twice per "cycle".

I wrapped the wire 4 wraps tightly around the plug wire up near the coil... not down at the plug end. But being one coil, one plug, one cylinder... I can't see how that would matter. On my car... I put it sorta in the middle on just cylinder #1 and it too read exactly half. It works great... switches right to tach from hours as soon as the engine is started... only reads 1/2 rpms though.

The packaging clears states 4-stroke... any 4-stroke. But perhaps a 2-stroke version got mixed up in packaging. Hope the seller can resolve. It was only $12... so not the end of the world.

Cheers!
