newbie questions

So I put in a new mikuni carb and switched out to a 115 jet. Changed the sprockets to 17 and 45. I had to grind the cover to get the 17 front sprocket to fit. DID I MAKE A MISTAKE!??? I took it out to see how the gear ratio change would affect the top end and God dropped a sleet storm on me. Seemed good until the sleet hit. Cruised at 30 in 3rd gear without too much RPMs. I dont have a tach but my ears told me it wasn't over revved.
Also I bought a mig welder to cut the cat. I saw a guy open up the air box and cut some plastic to increase air flow. Should I do that?

Bingo! Take it back to neutral, and explain your equipment a tad. You’ve done gone from 1st, heading to 4th, and telling us about your welding unit, all within a weather report……. all while giving us an update on your hearing test.
Let’s begin, again. Just the facts……. Help us, help you
