but the intake needs to be .004 anyways due to the decompression.... stupid mechanical design... akin to the DR650 counterbalance "doohicky" that implodes... it has a little weight that flips a shaft from rounded to flat that bumps the intake valve to relieve compression on the compression stroke... great in theory, but... when its made of chinese pot metal and spun (out of balance by design) to 1700 rpm (half the crank speed) it tends to break after sustained use... LOL go figure... a non counterbalanced motor that may have a bit of vibration that could crack pot metal...who knew...

we wouldnt know anything about that here...

Just putting on the 17 tooth today, required a grinder to be taken to the cover. I know this is not the norm, but had to be done. Just wasn't going back on.
After the carb install, and a lil gas, happy to say she fired up about 3rd try.
Anxious to get a ride in, but Saturday is my son's 6th b-day, so my weekend pretty booked. But might get lucky (fingers crossed).
Have a few more updates after, hopefully.

Lol, he does owe me a good ole swampin or two.
After all the guard duty I've had'm on, just keeping chickens from shiting on it. We had a good laugh that involved his aim vs a handful of chicken feed. (Didn't want any unnecessary holes in my new baby). Or chicken shit.
Just picture man in wheelchair, next to a hawk. Chicken on the hawk, hand full of chicken feed in 1 hand, 357 in the other, getting as close as he can.

Bogie, the Doohicky is on the Kawasaki KLR's, not the DR650's. The DR's are really simple mills, that's why I picked one up over the KLR. No water cooling, no doohickies, and still carbureted.

I deleted my previous post, can't expect everyone to have priorities akin to mine. I'm the type to hit a project hard and fast and quickly lose interest and patience if it gets back shelved. Any who..

Right now I'm kicking my own a$$ for not going the Mikuni clone route! $26 from Amazon with free shipping and voila it runs. The bowl screws were extremely tight, I had to grind a millimeter off the tip of my Phillips to get it to seat better.

It came with a 40 pilot, 0.4 turns out on the mixture screw, needle clip center position, and a 100 main. Included was a separate jet/rebuild kit but neither the pilot or main were stamped with a size. I held both pilots up to the light and the unmarked one had a visibly smaller orifice, so I'm guessing it's a 20.

Well in the interest of getting it running I followed the standard/improper carb tune (because the pilot jets won't arrive till the 29th) used by most members of the fb groups. I installed the smaller (20?) pilot, set the screw to 2.5 turns out, left the needle in the center position, and dropped a 110 main jet in.

Jay put it on the bike and boom, it runs revs and idles great. And it took a good while for the shipping oil to start smoking off the pipe so that tells me it's probably getting enough fuel for the moment. It did take about 3 tries to get it fired up but 2 of those were because he hadn't opened the petcock 😅. He then ran it for two 10 minute heat cycles and then shut 'er down for the evening.

The initial runs of my Hawk didn't go near as pleasantly. Fighting to keep it running, pipe instantly hot and smoking, it was very discouraging to say the least. And then hours of trial and error tuning AFTER having to cut the carb open and drilling the pilot jet. I should've just slapped a Mikuni on there and been done with it.

Just ordered some JIS crosspoint drivers, been meaning to for a while but having to grind the tip on my Philips was a good reminder.
