Small cc Motorcycle Survey
I am Jose, a student at California State Polytechnic University Pomona trying to secure funding to design and build an electric motorcycle using a Hellcat as a donor bike. My team is mostly composed of morotcycle riders ( I have a Boom 125 and a CSC tt250 ).
I am in a program that is now willing to fund us but at this step we approximately 15 more surveys. It would be awesome to get the ChinaRiders help answering some questions. Answers via private message are preferred, but comments work also. The questions are: 1. What is the primary use of your Hellcat/Grom/Razkull/Z125/Kpipe? 2. What do you like about your bike? 3. What do you not like about your bike? 4. How long are your average rides? 5. If you could change something on it (anything) what would it be? 6. What comes to mind when you think of electric motorcycles? 7. Would you buy an electric motorcycle? Thanks, Jose |

I can only anwserone and seven as I don't own any of those bikes or an E bike.
1) I have about 35 years riding experience and 26 of that on the street. I live in an area where E-bikes can't keep up, either not enough speed or limited range. I could see them useful for city dwellers and small towns. 7)See #1. I wouldn't own an E-bike as long as I live where I live. I will never move into a town or a city. If anything, I will move into an even more rural setting. That's the plan at this time. I travel by bike. I don't commute at all. My work is at home. I have a select few that I do motorcycle, auto, and lawn/garden equipment work for. They come to me. |

I lead somewhat of a dual life. During the work week, I live in an urban area and have a seven mile commute to work; one way. A small electric motorcycle, like a Boom, would be entirely adequate. Speeds on my commute rarely exceed 50 mph. A 125cc ICE scooter is definitely adequate. An electric bicycle would also work for my work week commute.
For the weekend, i drive 85 miles (one way) to my house. ICE required.

What range would be enough for you to consider an electric motorcycle a viable option? Would 100 or 90 miles be good enough for you?

My bike is the Icebear Fuerza. Pretty much the bike is awesome. The price is a lot cheaper than the Groms. So for a fun toy, the Groms are hard to justify especially once you start doing bore kits and performance parts. With the Grom clones, the price plus a ZS190cc makes it a good buy.
Average rides are about an hour. I'm not really pushing it too hard. Just ride around my side of town and then head home. Not much to change on these bikes. I mean they're pretty simple. Would be nice if they labeled the wires or something. But overall have been pretty happy with it. I do like that all parts (excluding engine) are swappable from a Grom which makes replacement parts easy. As for electric... there is an electric version of the Boom Vader. However, I don't think the range is very good and the top speed is pretty low. Would definitely get an electric motorcycle if the price point is right. |

1. What is the primary use of your Hellcat/Grom/Razkull/Z125/Kpipe?
commute to work 2. What do you like about your bike? perfect for lane splitting and houston traffic congestion 3. What do you not like about your bike? rattly and I have to keep close eye on what's going on with it 4. How long are your average rides? 15 to 20 minutes twice a day 5. If you could change something on it (anything) what would it be? not rattly and better suspension 6. What comes to mind when you think of electric motorcycles? money and battery crap out in a few years to where you have to buy a new set up 7. Would you buy an electric motorcycle? if it was affordable and replacement battery wasnt as much as the whole bike

Joe - since my weekend commute must be done at highway speeds, I would need an e-motorcycle with an advertised range of 1.5 times the length of my commute distance. Battery life can be unpredictable at 60 mph and above.
I would prefer something similar to the Electra Meccanica solo one that possessed the speed and range I need. It rains a lot here.
