magician 250 starting battery issues

i put my magician together to day MY FIRST EVER BUILD and went to start it w/ the choke up withe the temp at around 38 degrees outside and it did start even through i had to keep the throttle rolled to keep the motor going and then when i went to restart it the battery was drained quit a bit it and now i got the battery on a charger again going at 2amps maintenance mode. what did i do wrong or is this normal starting problems at low temperatures also when can i find a better quality battery for my magician

not sure about the magician but the hawks battery had to have the electrolyte added to it and then charged on low trickle charge. not had a minutes trouble out of mine. the choke on the hawk is full up for full choke. try all three positions when starting to see if thats it. may need jetting and carb adjustment too.
