Question about valve adjustment

When I assembled my Bashan Storm 250 I adjusted the valves; however, I failed to verify the engine was on the compression stroke when I made the adjustment. I decided to perform the adjustment again this evening to make sure I did it properly. After the adjustment this evening I noticed quite a bit of a "clattering" noise. Note: there was no "clattering" noise after I originally made the adjustment. From what I've read on this forum this noise seems to be normal but I want to make sure I did it properly. Let know what you think of these steps.

1. Removed valve cover

2. Made sure engine was on the compression stroke by turning the crank until I saw the intake valve drop, I kept turning the crank until I saw the "T" line up with the indicator mark.

3. I loosened the stems on the rocker arms, set gap on intake valve to 0.004", and 0.005" on the exhaust valve.

4. Tightened the stems on the rocker arms

5. Replaced the valve cover

Anything wrong with this procedure?

only thing i would have done differently i after setting valve clearences, turn engine over 1x by hand ( easy with spark plug out...) to get it on exhaust stroke , double check your exhaust valve clearence, tighten everything back up, hand crank one more time to make sure theres no binding or weird crap happening. Reassemble and enjoy the tappy tappy ride!
( just a side note, i always manually hand turn an engine after setting or adjusting clearences to make sure theres no binding or funky stuff happening....)

Shouldn't those be set in "mm"?

According to my Bashan Owners Manual, All "200 and 250 Storm/WILL Engines" should be set to:

Intake 0.04mm and Exhaust 0.05mm

or

Intake 0.00157" and Exhaust 0.001968"

Mine are now making the "tappy tappy I'm happy" sound after setting them the exact same way you did, only difference was with the numbers I provided above

Azhule is correct. You set the valve clearances too loose. Repeat the procedure and set the intake valve clearance to 0.04 mm, and the exhaust valve clearance to 0.05 mm.

Well, crap!! No wonder there was so much clanking! I set the valves to inches instead of mm!! The way I figure it the clearance I set is just about double what it should have been. Looks like I have another adjustment ahead of me tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Yep...like Azhule says, "MM". Also, I set mine at .05 intake and .08 exhaust because they tighten as they wear. CSC sets the TT250 (same basic engine) at .07 and .07. I'm going to try that on my X-Moto next time around.
Now that you're thoroughly confused, carry on! ;-)

Today I took the time to readjust the valves in mm and not inches, didn't notice a tremendous difference but it's nice to know the valves are set correctly.
