After re-reading your last post, I thought I should include that you simply pull the lever all the way back for reverse, and push it all the way up for forward. There is no detent for reverse or forward, like in a car.

I think the spring on the lever at the rear axle takes up any additional stress.

When I pulled the top off and found the lever was on the wrong side of the dog I also noticed the forward gear was on a detent spring to keep it engaged , so does the spring in your picture also help to pull the cable and gear back into the forward position?

Now that you mention it, I think it does, since there is little tension on the cable as it is returned to the forward position. I haven't dismantled it in years.

Was also thinking today about maybe modifying a t/bar auto lever , as it already has the interlocking notches

Not sure what you mean by that.

It's important to point out that the reverse mechanism behaves just like an emergency brake. You simply pull the lever until you feel good resistance; you're not pulling the lever to a specific point. There is no need or benefit to detent notches.
