Someone had posted they wanted to see my Ural so here it is. 1997 Ural Sportsman, has full time 2wd (limited slip differential).

I also have a 1980 Yamaha XS1100 for highway cruising.

My son and I have considered getting a pair of the much-maligned CJ750 bikes, but without the hack. Something about that old military style really appeals to us. How has the boxer been for you? Have you replaced any parts with BMW stuff?

My Dad has the very same 1100; very nice bike to ride, but I always wished it had another gear up top. It revs really high on the highway.

How old is the Ural? It appears to be in excellent condition.

I assume the Ural has brake shoes in the rear. How well do the brake shoes stop the Ural with sidecar?

My Ural is a 1997,the last year with kick start only. Has cable brakes with shoes all around. It is much different then the ones sold today even though it looks much the same.

The CJ is a lot different then the Ural and neither the Ural or CJ are interchangeable with the BMW's, even the old ones. I've always liked the style of the CJ better, but reliability/quality from what I've heard not as good and they have even less power then the Urals. If they are gone through completely and built ground up that is the only way they are supposed to be reliable. The bikes that are suppose to be good are the Dnepr bikes, similar in design to the CJ but built tougher for military use in the former soviet union. The newer Urals (post 2004) are much better and more reliable then the earlier bikes, but also much more expensive and they have lost some of their old school flair with hydrolic/disk brakes, syncro tranny and many japanese parts to make it more reliable.

The XS is lovely but pales in beauty to your lady friend. That looks like my area where the picture was taken. The Gorge? Bickleton?
