Doh! Hawk 250 sprocket change

Hello all!


I am hoping someone can assist me with an issue i am having after trying to change my front sprocket today! (ill do my best to type this out hopefully it makes sense)



I finally had time to really mess with my hawk today. I rode it around my neighborhood for about an hour today on and off (nice day here finally not raining).



I wanted to get a feel for how it felt stock before i started changing things out. I started with the back sprocket now i have changed my sprockets out and my chain on my old bike so i was familiar with the process. Back sprocket went on fine except the clip that seems sketchy since the bolts aren't actually holding on to anything and they come right out but i got it changed.


The issue i ran into was changing the front sprocket. The first question i have (btw im going to a 17t and 45 on the back) is the clip it does not line up when slotted in the grooves i can turn it in the slot and get it lined up but im curious is that how it supposed to work? It seems like it should slot into the grove and line up without having to turn it but i put the old sprocket on and it looks like that is the case?



Also can anyone help me find a replacement bolt one of them broke off in my new sprocket.

That clip is what holds the sprocket on the shaft. Rotate the clip to line up the bolt holes then bolt it in place. As far as the bolts your local hardware store will have them. Just bring one with you and match up.

Ok that's what I thought I just wanted to make sure before I put it on and rode it. I am not used to that normally it just screws into the bike without a clip but it's not my old bike and I'll have to get used to things being different.

Yes I'll have to do that I think I have enough left of one to find a replacement.

So I'm guessing I don't need to tighten the hell out of it next time?

The snap ring being the main method of sprocket retention isn't anything new. They actually copied it straight from some older Honda bikes. The 4 studs may not be for retention, and are instead part of the cush drive, but if they are not secured properly or there is too much play in the system it can cause issues. Having as little play as possible here is a good thing.

The front sprocket retainer does in fact go into the groove and then turn. When bolted together with the sprocket this creates a mechanical fix on the shaft that prevents the sprocket from sliding around and changing alignment with the chain.

I'll hit the hardware store and get some new bolts thank you!

Haha that's also some good info on the clip I didn't know that learn something new every day! My last bike was a 2015 so I wasn't even aware that they used clips.

I do have to say though that this is a neat little bike I wasn't expecting a whole lot but it's actually pretty great. Gives me a chance to brush up on my mechanical skills (lacking) and to learn alot.

I am ready to get my other dash in though not sure why the stock doesn't show rpm but that really throws me off.

Make sure the hardware you get is grade 10.9 (Metric equivalent of grade 8).

They don't get torqued very tightly either, no more than 12-15ft-lbs.

I highly recommend either lock washers and/or loctite on these bolts.
