Hawk Lowered fender and windshield

I wanted to make my Hawk a bit more streamlined for street use so I lowered and bobbed the original front fender and added a sport windshield. I trimmed about 5 inches off the front of the fender and used the original mountig holes to bolt it to some aluminum straps I bought at Home Depot. The mount is nice and solid, even with the rubber mounting grommets.

The windshield is a piece of polycarbonate (also from HD) that I trimmed with an aviation snips, smoothed with a file, and then thermoformed by hand with a heatgun. For the windshield profile, I just traced the outline of the headlight housing and flipped it upside down. At about 50mph, the windshield does a great job of deflecting wind from the neck down-- I am a 6 ft rider.

P.S, Forgive the Honda decals.. I got tired of trying to explain the whole Haosan/RPS/Hawk thing to people so now there is no need for anyone to ask what it is.

No kidding!! Everyone ask. So now I just say its a Honda clone...Period! No details. Fact is they are only asking because its the thing to do. They dont really care. Those that do would probably recognize a china bike.

I've been thinking about a windshield also. How thick was the poly sheet you bought?

Wow! Great look!! I think the Magician would benefit from similar upgrades, too.

The Lexan polycarbonate sheet I used is 0.093 inch thick. The sheet was 12x24 inches, cost $15.

The windshield size is 9 inch wide before bending, and 7.5 inch tall at the highest point.
The 12x24 sheet is big enough to make 2 windshields.

I'm really digging that lowered fender look. Could you please show some better pictures of it: like looking straight down on the bracket, where you cut it and how much?

Thank you

P.s. I also like those side bags. Could you tell us more about them?

I liked the windshield so much that I made one for my bike today. Only a little different. I used 3M double stick body mold tape instead of screws and I put a curved lip on top to deflect the wind better. It made a big difference from leaving it straight.

It's not coming off. I used the same 3M tape used to put body molds on vehicles. Just have to make sure you stick it in the right spot because it sticks as soon as it touches. I used a propane torch to heat and bend. Took me about 20-30minutes to make. $10 bought enough plastic to make three windshields. I had a lot of practice making bass boat windshields back in the day.

So, gloves? What was the mold surface used to form the bends etc? Not too hot , right? You are making it sound easier than I bet it was, I guess the poly is good stuff vs the old plexi crap.

I bet you could make a body panel out of that stuff if you had to. Paint it on the inside to show color thru, wonder how that would look. It would be a tough sob panel.

Gloves??? We don't need no stinking gloves. it's not that hard to make. I used a piece of cardboard to make a template. Used a razor knife to score and break it. Used a sanding drum on my drill press to shape and smooth the edges. Put the windshield on the edge of my workbench and heated it down the center to make the bend. Once I had it mounted on the bike is used a sheet metal tong and heated the windshield to make the curved lip on top.
