Exhaust Header Mod - Hawk 250
So I had the catalytic converter removed from my exhaust header, and the muffler shop welded it all back together for me. I’ve painted the outside with fireproof paint, but my question is won’t it still corrode from the inside out? Especially where the root of the new weld is exposed bare metal? How corrosive are exhaust gases? Is this something I need to concern myself with? What has everyone else done?

How much surface rust do you have Jerry? My Hawk is only a couple months old and I have some pretty good pitting and surface rust on the header bend. Is that normal?

I've painted mine with a good high temp paint when i first did the cat removal. The original paint was kind of light. If you get a good heavy coating on it it will be easy to keep up. I repaint it at least once a year.

My thought was that after welding it back together the bare weld on the inside is exposed to exhaust gases, a major component of which is vaporized water. I suppose if the corrosion rate is relatively slow it’s probably not a big deal.
