'nother Dr. Visit

Man, this getting old ain't what it's cracked up to be.

Paid a visit to my regular doc that I've been seeing for damn near 40 years to look at what I thought might be a ganglion cyst on the palm of my left hand.

He looks at it, says it could be cyst, could be a thickening tendon. Go see this hand specialist.

So, I see the hand specialist yesterday. I don't think he is old enough to shave. Anyway, he looks at my hand and it's not a cyst. He gave me a name, but I'm old and forgot it already. But, short and stinky, it's a thickened tendon. Surgery has 50% chance of fixing it and a 50% chance of making it worse.

Then he asks what kind of pain I'm in and I tell him none at the moment but if I need to start yanking on big wrenches, swinging BFHs, or climbing equipment ladders, things can get pretty sore.

This was the best part. He stops telling me about the surgery, looks me square in the eye, and says "You're 61 years old, why are you pulling on wrenches, climbing ladders, and swinging hammers?* You should be a supervisor by now."

"I am a supervisor, but these machines don't fix themselves. Add that I'm always short staffed means I gotta get in there, too, to get the job done."

We decided that I'll need to start wearing fingerless gloves when I start doing heavy stuff now. I'm a bicyclist so there has to be 10/15 pairs around the garage that I can use.

I know the feeling. The older we get ,the more that breaks or wears out. lol But you have the right mind set. Don't stop, and keep active. The minute you stop you will completely fall apart. My dad who just passed away this year lived to be 95. 2 months shy of his 96th birthday. He never stopped. He helped me change a roof on my house at 80. Climbed around that roof better than some of he younger help I had. I' m 59 and I am now where near the shape he was in when he was in his mid 70's. At the age of 42 I ruptured a disk in my back that paralyzed me from the waist down for about 4 weeks. Was laid up for 6 months on my back until I had surgery. After years of therapy I have never stopped and keep pushing myself. It's only been the last couple of years that I am finally able to do almost anything I did before the accident. That's why I got the Hawk. To make up for all the fun I missed out all those years. Like my dad i'll keep moving until they put me in a pine box. So keep on turning them wrenches.

Keep wrenching!

My dad fell into the lazy thing and started spending a lot of his time in front of a TV, went down hill physically and mentally. A stroke took him out a few years ago. As much as it was heartbreaking, it was also a blessing compared to what the Alzheimer's and some physical issues were leading him towards. If he'd stayed active the physical issues would surely be better, and probably his mind too.

It would suck to be schooled by a guy who isn't old enough to shave. That said, sometimes we have to twist wrenches when nobody else seems equipped to do the job. I'll likely be wrenching for a living to 65 and beyond.

About to be 40. My vision is not as good, but otherwise I am doing okay. My Dad is about to 75. He is has started a downhill slide in the past year. Been seeing alot more doctors.

Sprung for a pair fingerless gloves at the show today. Wore 'em home. Jury is still out. Just seems that gloves of any sort are uncomfortable in the handle bar mitts.

Off topic, but related to your ride home today--how is the weather/snow on the ground? The past few months, as Yuma is in the cold months (mainly in the early mornings) which is exaggerated by all the agricultural irrigation in the county areas I ride through, I have had to layer a few pairs of gloves under my riding gloves. On the really cold mornings (mid-30s Faranheit), I wear two pairs of nitrile gloves under wool gloves, under my riding gloves. That is about the extent of my layers--one pair of nitrile gloves, the wool gloves and the riding gloves last year were not enough. The only reason I wore nitrile gloves was thanks to Spudrider mentioning it a few years back as to how he keeps warm while winter riding up in Idaho.

No snow and mid forties today. I rode into Rosemont with just the mitts and the heated grips set to 'low'. I wore the gloves back home just to try them out.

Prior to being the owner of a pair of heated grips that came with a free motorcycle attached, I just wore a pair of motorcycle specific winter gloves of thick leather and Thinsulate lining. Better than most gloves, but I still got cold if the temp was below freezing and rode more than ten miles.

Handle bar mitts/Hippo hands can probably replace gloves. Or just a pair of Nitrile ones(can't wear 'em, sweat too much). The mitts I bought are faux fur lined and wind proof.

Cheese...one way to look at the young dr . Is that they are recently out of medical school and are aware of the latest procedures, drugs technology etc.

Ya don't last forever. Trust me on this one and I'll only be 58 in March. Keep turning those wrenches as long as you can, cheesy. I hurt far less now that I finally have a "sittin' job"....but everything else has fallen to s--t without the constant movement.

Well, I was 30 twice. Am still for a few more weeks.
