My first car was a 1982 Chevette diesel. 50hp and 60mpg at 55mph.
I also had a 94 escort wagon that got 40mpg on the highway. I laugh at these people buying a prius and tell me they get 45mpg due to the technology. I paid $100 for the chevette. Allen

My '96 Buick Roadmaster once got 27 mpg at 77mph from L.A. to Kingman, AZ. I filled it up in L.A. after a visit, and this was in the summer so I had the air conditioning on from my parents' home to Kingman, and set the cruise at 77mph. When I filled the car in Kingman, that is the mileage I got (yes I recalculated several times!). I guess the combination of torque, horsepower and car weight factored in (Roadmasters are not trucks, so "only" weigh about 2 tons or 4000 pounds vs the 5000+ of GM's pickups |

Escort 1.9L 5 speed manual. I got 37 in suburban driving. They were known to run lean.
I think the 99 had a bigger engine.

Autos not so great for mileage.
I should have kept it. Strip off all unnesisary frills (like it had any) to lighten the load to see what kind of mileage it could have gotton. Allen
