Zongshen RX3: Replacement Batteries

My Zongshen RX3 motorcycle came equipped with a YTZ12S battery. This battery has the following specifications.

The YTZ14S battery has the same dimensions, and is a little more powerful. Here are the specifications for the YTZ14S battery.

My Honda XR650L came equipped with a YTX9-BS/ETX9/ES9BS battery, which has the following specifications.

Amp/Hr: 8.0
C.C.A.: 120

If your battery dies while traveling, and you need an emergency replacement, this battery is frequently stocked by Walmart, AutoZone, and O'Reilly Auto Parts.

This battery easily cranks the much larger engine in my Honda XR650L, so I am sure it will also easily crank the smaller engine of the Zongshen RX3.

The dimensions of this battery are almost identical to the YTZ12S and YTZ14S batteries; the ETX9 battery is merely 3/16" (5 mm) shorter than the other two batteries.

For the last 7 years I have been running my Honda XR650L with a Shorai LFX09L2-BS12 battery.

If you like lithium/iron/phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, any battery with a C.C.A. rating of 120, or higher, should easily start the Zongshen RX3. However, if you are running a lot of electrical accessories, you might need the higher Ah capacities provided by the lead/acid batteries. I only run heated grips on my Honda XR650L.

The smaller, LiFePO4 batteries will easily crank the RX3 engine, but they lack the current reserve capacity of the larger, lead/acid batteries. Therefore, the smaller LiFePO4 batteries might be drained, and damaged, by the heavy current demand of running many electrical accessories.

The Shorai served me well in my TW200.

It was beginning its 6th year and still going strong when I sold the bike.

My Shorai battery finally died after 7 years of cranking the 650 cc engine in my Honda XR650L. My Shorai battery served me well.

This is great Spud. I had done some research of batteries for the RX3 when the times comes. Here is what I found:

Yuasa YTZ12S-DS Battery
Positive on the Left, Negative on the Right

Do you believe that the 14Ah Lithium batteries would NOT be able to keep up with a heavily farkled RX3 like mine which has the following:

300 watt stator

160 watts used for normal operation

140 watts available
Standard headlight is 35W. Genssi uses 76W = 36W difference
Volt/temp gauge = 5W as a guess
2 x 2.1A @ 5V USB chargers = 10.5W each = 21W
Hyperlites = 3W
2 x Offroad spot lights = 10W each = 20W
SpeedoDRD = 5W as a guess
Glove liners = 15.6W on high
Jacket liner = 84W on high

36+5+21+3+20+5+15.6+84=189.6W used for accessories

160+189.6=349.6W


According to this my stator and battery which are stock should not be keeping up but they do. I've never had it run the battery down even on LONG riding days of 10+ hours and then repeating that the next and next days with out a trickle charger to top off.

Huh, that article was written by another Pacific Northwet person. Cool. Yeah, I made sure to do the math as I did the add-on's but knew I'd be over.

Jay contacted me and called out my 76W on the LED so I checked again and they now list it as 170LM/W and the LED I have has a 4000LM low beam and 4000LM high beam for a max of 8000LM's. I rarely use the high beam so math said 25W for just the low beam and 50 if I flip on the high beam. So updating the math shows:

300 watt stator

160 watts used for normal operation

140 watts available
Standard headlight is 35W. Genssi uses 50W max or 25W with just the low beam on
Volt/temp gauge = 5W as a guess
2 x 2.1A @ 5V USB chargers = 10.5W each = 21W
Hyperlites = 3W
2 x Offroad spot lights = 10W each = 20W
SpeedoDRD = 5W as a guess
Glove liners = 15.6W on high
Jacket liner = 84W on high

25+5+21+3+20+5+15.6+84=178.6W used for accessories

160+178.6=338.6W


Again, I've not killed my battery...yet!


I do have a clamp AMP meter so maybe if I pull the saddle in the future I can check the AMP draw with the bike running and convert the AMPs to Watts based on the voltage showing on my integrated gauge.

Well, theoretically...wouldn't you start blowing a fuse if you exceed the limit. I doubt you have exceeded the wattage at any given time yet. But your pushing it with those heating coils. I remember one time you said you were cooking yourself with them on and you had to turn it off

Based upon my research, I would not trust the LiFePO4 batteries to have enough current capacity to handle the load of your accessories. The lithium battery manufacturers label their batteries with a "Pb Equivalent" rating for amp hours. However, this "Pb Equivalent" rating is more indicative of cranking power than reserve current capacity.

For example, I own a Shorai LFX14L2-BS12 battery. The bottom of this battery sports a label indicating it actually has a 4.0 Ah rating, which is only 29 percent of their "Pb Equivalent" rating. The LiFePO4 batteries crank very hard, but they will not sustain heavy current loads like a lead/acid battery. I have purchased two Motocross batteries from BatteryStuff, and they have performed beautifully. The 11.2 Ah capacity of the YTZ14S battery will serve you well with all the accessories you run, especially the heated jacket and gloves.

BatteryStuff offers an excellent price for this Motocross battery, and their customer service is superb. I highly recommend this vendor.

You might also consider the Motocross YTZ12S battery. The Motocross YTZ12S is virtually identical to the Motocross YTZ14S, and costs $12 less.

My battery died 2 days ago. I called CSC, because I really wanted to ride that day.

A very friendly and professional Steve at CSC took time to get me an alternate battery replacement number, which saved the day. Its a more common CTZ 12 BS battery. Got an AGM from battery world for about $89 bucks. I can't get over the rapid and outstanding customer support from CSC.
