zongshen clunking noise

hey guys i just had a question about a problem i noticed this morning.

i started my bike like i always do and rode down to my gate 250 ft.
i shifted into neutral and as it idled i heard a clunk. i gave it some gas and i let off as it dropped back to idle it clunked again it didnt happen systematically it was a random sound like something was loose maybe more of a deep pop. it only did it about 3-5 times and i took back to house and drove my truck to work. i didnt want to get stranded or do any major damage. the bike seemed to run fine other than noise.
im not sure what to check first. about 2,000 miles ago the piston and valves were replaced by dealer but it is now out of warranty. 6200 total miles on it. i would deeply appreciate any suggestions.

Did it start normally? where did you hear the clunk? Could it have been from the exhaust? Loose exhaust or motor mount or some fitting somewhere?

it started fine just like normal. i will have to pin oint the noise when i get home . maybe from head but i dont know what could be loose and the bikemstill run good. but it was loud enough to make me think it is coming from inside engine.

Real hard to tell at this point but most likely to be something loose external to the engine. let us know.

Zongs tend to hold up pretty well, based on our limited cummulitive experience. That said, you've already had a problem...

well FASTDOC
you were right. it was external technically the stator/coil assembly bolts were all loose one was so loose it was banged up alittle and i believe it was bouncing around catching on the inside of what i think would be a magneto if that is what it is. it had some scrape marks probably from the bolt. the stator was replaced about 5,500 miles ago and i guess the bolts werent tightened as much as they could have been. it may have been the viberation. i ran it for a while and no noise so praise the lord! no out of pocket expenses other than the quart of oil. anyways thanks for the input.

Always praise the Lord.

Glad it was a non-event. Smart move not taking it to work today.

Everyone should put that on the list of all the bolts to check and double check.

Is this magneto dry or oil bath? Would Loctite be wise here?

its oil bath, but loctite would still work i think even though i havent seen this happen before and i have a hard time buying that it wasnt installed properly and holding together this long, davidson seems to be having a lot of trouble from this zong. maybe he got a lemon, yes it happens but i would like have his thoughts on this

As I understand it Locktite is necessarly anerobic so once it sets the oil would not effect it.

the only way i have found to remove locktite is to grind wire brush or chip it off and i havent seen oil affect it. the way i understand it is anerobic cures in the absence of air but i am confused with that i have spilled some in my tool tray and had to chip it off and i know, even though i pile tools it had to get a little air. and it looks like it would harden in the bottle, if i put the cap on and didnt pour it in the bottom of my tray and yes im sure china has loctite by gallon as i buy quite a lot of the cheapest i find (harbor freight) but it seems to work
and kato would a chinese lemon be soy-soaked, stir fried, or raw wraped in seaweed :roll:

I wish i had used loctite when i tightened the screws up. I have had issues with some of the warranty work ive had done i have had to go back after missing screws. I dont think that it would have ran this long if it wasnt tightened when it was installed. i drive around 30 minutes one way to and from work i average between 50 and 55 miles an hour. it may not be alot but maybe the viberation is enough over time to loosen them.
I have had several problems with this bike more than i have had with any other but iguess sometimes that just happens. I still will depend on this bike for a daily driver but when i change the sprockets at next chain replacement i will be able to double check the bolts hopefully they will stay tight.

i may be wrong here, but it sounds like he is having more problems with the work that has been done. and he's being real discreet, my complements on the restraint davidson. i think anything or anybody can make a lemon but the thought that has crossed mind. we are compairing 2006 models to newer everything else and im sure we can all agree that china has made vast improvements in the last year or 2. on second thought that may make me steamed that we havent got any new models. but then anyone who buys a china bike should know its for the person who enjoys tinkering. hope i wasnt being too transparent with my bias

He Phil,

What is the scoop on the new Sierra 200. Are we going to see a newer unit? Also Phil, I always love your input, it is the best we can get. I consider you a pro!
