LED turn signal Help

Howdy folks,

I recently purchased a set of 4 LED turn signal for my Magician.. Simply because the cover for one of my turn signal fell off while riding and I figured Id upgrade.

I'm NOT a wiring wiz, but current signals simply had bullet connectors, as did the new LED's.

I plugged them in, and nothing. Bullet connectors are easy so just in case I had my wires mixed up I swapped them and still nothing.

The current signals are NOT LED, so do I need a different type of flasher relay or something? I really thought this would be plug and play.

Thanks

There might not be enoigh load on the system with your new leds to activate the relay. If you connect just one led at the front or rear and leave the other side the stock signal, do they activate?

Do the LED lights come on and stay solid? Or do they stay off at all times?

With those Q's out of the way here is some random stuff I learned when upgrading my Kawasaki KLR 650 lights to LEDs...

You will most likely need to upgrade to a different Flasher to get all 4 LED turn signals to work... LEDs use much less wattage than the old school bulbs so most Flashers will not work with the LEDs...

Sometimes the easiest way to find out if you need a LED flasher or if you need to figure out a wiring problem (sometimes I have to "beef up" the LED Ground Wires) is to try Half the lights using the old bulbs and the other Half using the new LEDs, Front use Original, Rear use LEDs...

Yes, you need a different flasher. The flasher relay that comes on the bike reads the amperage draw to activate, LED bulbs don't draw enough to get that type of flasher to operate...ARH

Yeah I tried every combination I could think of, including just wiring one in. So not enough load on they system to activate the relay.. Does that mean the LEDs aren't pulling enough juice to engage the relay?

Can I pick up a LED specific relay at say Autozone? If so, what makes it different from a standard relay?

Sorry to hear about your bike btw Megadan.

It takes less current flow to operate it. There are some that are timer controlled instead of load controlled, but they are more expensive...ARH

It's the same old single bulb story as http://www.chinariders.net/showpost....45&postcount=2 btw. those 2 diodes often can harvested from some E-waste

it was old and no longer valid so i made a screen grab of my purchase history. have you tried hooking all 4 up and see if they work. vaguely remember something not working when i put mine on and seems like you had to have at least two hooked up maybe????

Yep, I more or less bought those. They don't have the running lights but they are identical. I'll try buying an LED flasher and report back.. My original seems to be going out regardless.

Do the flashers that come on these bikes get wet easily? It seems that after 5 rides (the bike is still new) the flasher should not be dying.

BTW the Hawk and Magician do come with different signals, that might play some minor role here.

I did successfully wire in a new digital gauge onto the Magician, it's pretty darn cool. So I'm surprised these lights are giving me a hard time.
