Baja 50 Oil flowing from crank vent tube?????
I am stumped. This Baja 50 is a 2005 but it is brand new, it has never been used. Installed new battery, cleaned carb, replaced key switch(lost key), and as expected it fired up. Ran it at idle for about 45 seconds and suddenly it spuged a puddle of oil from vent tube on crank case. Not a splash, but a quart. Shut it down checked oil level. Full to bottom of threads. Figured it was overfilled. Started it again and after a minute.... out came the oil. HELP I have never seen this before. Any suggestions,

Sounds like you still have too much. Not sure what you mean by "bottom of threads". If you mean the dip stick threads, that's too much.
To check the oil; thread out dip stick wipe off put dip stick back in but don't thread it in Pull dip stick out and see where oil line is. There should a line on the stick, of not, figure about half way.

Oil level
Surprisingly, this little quad does not have a distinct. It only has a cap. If I remove cap and shine light in.... the oil level is at the bottom of the threads....
If that is still to much, I can deal with that. My concern was running it again and causing damage potentially. Should I use a dipstick from another small engine quad? |

On some transmissions, they use a second bolt somewhere on the side that is removed to tell if the oil level is correct. You fill it until the oil comes out of that hole. I wonder if its something like that?

You can look at a parts list here. You'll have to click on the manual link;
https://www.monsterscooterparts.com/...ts/models/wd50 I took a look and it lists an oil level window. Its located on right side (when sitting), at the bottom of the cover, toward the rear tire. It also shows just a cap rather than a dipstick. You'll have to find the window to check your level.

Awesome information. As you said I found the 3/4" bolt and removed it to find it was still a half qt over filled. I'm assuming the shop that sold it 15 years ago had someone simply fill all the machines as they uncrated them. Remember this machine had NEVER been used. The bolt hole would normally have a looking glass, but to save money a bolt fills it.
Thank you. I will update if any further mysteries occur. |
