Hangkai 18HP 2 Stroke Outboard

Well I decided to get back into fishing again so i bought a nice used 15' aluminum boat and in the true Chinariders spirit, I ordered a Hangkai 18HP 2 stroke outboard off of Amazon that was fairly cheap compared to the name brand stuff. https://amzn.to/3xxVFOq I also installed an Tach/Hour meter. https://amzn.to/3REYNii

My first impression when I opened the box was it looked like a nice, well built motor. It included everything needed like the tank, gas hose, extra spark plugs, Impeller and gaskets. I took it out of the box and set it on my motor stand that i built. As per instructions, i added gear oil to the foot. I did a 25:1 mixture for the break-in as per instructions. Need to run this mixer for the first 10 hours then switch to a 50:1 mixture after. I hooked up the water to the foot, then pumped the bulb up on the gas line till hard. Pulled the choke and gave it a pull on the rope. I was shocked that it started on the first pull. Can't wait to get my trailer in so I can go take it for a ride.

A buddy of mine gave me a boat trailer this week. He actually gave me a boat motor and trailer. Engine is shot and hull needs lots of TLC so I'll be parting them out. The trailer i ordered never did get here so I cancelled that order. I'll install the motor on Saturday and take her out for a test ride.

This is the boat and motor i was given. Looks god from afar but far from good looking. lol It has cracked ribs and broken welds all over. I'm not wasting any time messing with it. If i don't sell it within a week, it's being scrapped at the recycle yard.

Those engines are relatively easy to rebuild. The pistons/rings might need replacement and new cylinder honing. Plastic/rubber parts might also need replacement, but everything else should be clean up only. The drive might need some work, but you can usually tell by manual turning. Even if the lower bearings are corroded out, those are cheap!

You have a nice Winter project there, and upgrade motor to put on another boat (or pull a skier with your flatboat !!!!).

Oh, i know. I've rebuilt plenty of outboards in my life time. I have a new motor and don't need another project. lol I actually have someone come pick everything up today.

I was looking at this very motor before buying my Hawk last year! I want to build the PM 38, a boat that Popular Mechanics put out the design for free in the magazine sometime in the early 60's, I believe. The plan is to power it with this motor.

The PM 38 was named because the cost of material was $38, could be built in 38 hours and would do 38 mph.

Very interested to see how this little motor performs.

That would be a nice project. I built quite a few boats in my day. My Grand father and one of my uncles were boat builders. The actually built LCVP Higgins boats in New Orleans for the military.

This little engine would be perfect. It is an exact copy of the Yamaha 15HP 2 Stroke. I'll take it on it's maiden voyage over the weekend. Guys on the FB group have hand no issues with the engine. Some have been running them for over 3 years. I've been running it o the water hose to start the break in. I'm still impressed with how it starts on the first crank even after sitting for a week.

The PM 38 is a basic runabout, 2 seater, 13 foot boat. Looks pretty simple to build. I'm thinking of using the glue and stitch method. Definitely glass the bottom and sides. Try to make it look really neat and maybe start selling them! That's my "old man" plan.

Took her out on its maiden voyage. Motor ran so smooth. I definitely need more pitch on the prop. It came with an 8 pitch prop. I ordered a22 pitch. Top speed with the 8 pitch was 24mph @6200 rpms. I need to get it down to about 5500 rpms.

You're not interrupting my thread. It's a boat and motor thread. Post away.

Heard of it...pretty sure I even looked at it. I keep coming back to the PM 38. I should probably look for a proper stitch and glue simple boat to build first before attempting the PM 38. I want to basically take the same shape as the PM 38 but modify certain areas for stitch and glue. I'm sure you guys know more about it than me. I'm subscribed to Salt Boatworks channel on YouTube. That's about the extent of my knowledge. lol
