1984 Honda Aero125 Project
Hey guys! it's been for ever! hope everyones doing well.
I recently got a 1984 honda aero 125. i got it runing well, then the next morning i go to start it and nothing. i have spark, getting fuel and have compression, but im pretty sure im getting to much fuel. the bystarter is completely broken off, and is just a hole. i can get it to run sometimes, i usually have to plug the choke hole with my finger to get it to start up, and when i do it idles rough, and eventually slows down and dies. sometimes i can get it to idle decent, then i go for a 200 foot ride, with good acceleration, and it feels great. but then after 200 ft or so it bogs down and wont idle and dies. reason i think its a fuel issue is because when its idling bad, if i unscrew the float bowl and drain out the gas, it begins to run/idle better and faster. could it be related to the float? im wondering if anyone knows a completely compatible/ including the throttle cable being compatible, carb i could buy to replace the stock one. i know the intake side bolts are 48mm apart, and the hole is 22mm. i have a carb that will bolt up, but the throttle slide doesnt go all the way down into the carb, i need to cut a small piece of the plastic on the cable so the cable goes down further i think ( if that will work please let me know) would love any suggestions on getting it running good again. im not even 100% sure its the carb. thanks!

A mikuni vm20 will bolt on ,not sure on what jetting you need ,but at least jets are cheap and easy to find so experiment a little .
I have a 1984 elite 125 ,looks kind of the same but mine is a four stroke .Some day I have to tear into it . |

thanks for the reply! I'm just worried that the throttle slide wont fit into it/reach all the way down into the intake throat. or could i just adjust the cable to fix that? im pretty new to messing with carbs until this project. I have cleaned this one out multiple times already.

also, any advice other than replacing the carb. i'd hate to spend the 80 bucks on one and have it not work

Before doing anything ,I would pull the original carb apart and clean the jelly out of it .I have read that parts are no longer available for your carb ,but it is often possible to clean them up with no new parts as long as you are careful not to rip the gaskets upon disassembly .Can you get us a picture of your carb or get us any numbers off of it ?

A little info I found .It looks like your original carb is a slide type with an electric solenoid on it .Since it's a Honda ,I bet the carb is a keihin carb ,should be fairly straight foreword to find a 19 or 20 mm two stroke carb and install jetting the same as the original carb ,if you don't mind ditching the electrical portion of the carb ( I am unsure if that's a choke ,fuel shutoff ,or ? ) . |

i messed with the float last night, and cleaned it all out with carb cleaner, it idled good, but when i went to ride, after about 45 seconds-1 minute it would bog down at full throttle and start releasing smoke out of the exhaust, and then die on idle when i stopped. does this mean im getting to much fuel? i will do the check atariguyfc recomended with the fuell line in with the float apart

That looks pretty close to a keihin pe series carb .Are you running it with the electric choke piece missing ?if so have you tried stuffing a rag or something in the hole to see how it runs ?

also, on another forum im trying to get help on, theyve pretty much concluded my lack of a choke, and just leaving it a hole, is why im flooding. is there anyway to bypass the choke? or should i just seal it off and see if i can tune my carb to run with it sealed, because as of now it will start but not run for more than 2 seconds with my finger over the choke hole.

What other forum are you on? There is a very popular thread on advrider's scooter section that a woman with a Honda Aero started quite a while back. It is not necessarily about the bike, but I am sure she, or her close group of friends, can help sort your bike out.
