Pop rivet brackets to aftermarket aluminum muffler?
I recently bought a set of saddlebags that I would like to use on my TBR7. I have a similar exhaust (CRF 230 type)to what most people replace the stock exhaust with. The muffler has no heat shield whatsoever, and I will have to figure something out. I am torn between using large hose clamps, or pop riveting brackets for a heat shield directly onto the muffler. I have a good bit of the exhaust wrap on hand, but I don't think it would offer enough protection for a bag contacting it constantly. Do you think pop riveting,or using hose clamps would be best ? Do you think that a couple wraps of the exhaust wrap would protect a cloth bag, with a plastic, or kinda rubbery coating. I appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks

Two layers of exhaust wrap would do the job.
I have wrap on my pipe where it passes my ankle down at the foot pegs. I can touch the wrapped pipe even after it has warmed up. I also have wrap on the punched out stock muffler for the same reason as you but I placed it under the stock heat shield. You can not even see the wrap. I am sure that two wraps and any shield you can cobble together would be safe for your bags at the muffler.

Direct metal mounting to the heat source isn't as effective. The most ideal way would be to build simple bag brackets to keep the bags off the rear tire and then put a simple heat shield on that exhaust side bracket. 2 birds with 1 stone

upload pic[/IMG] I ended up going a different route. I had to remove the plastic muffler guard when I put my aftermarket exhaust on, because it was actually attached to the stock muffler. I ended up making a bracket that allowed me to attach the stock plastic muffler cover to existing screws up under the passenger hand holds. I really like this bike, and have almost 2,000 units (pretty sure odometer reads in kilometers ) on it . I have 2 other street bikes now, but ride the TBR7 so much more, that I feel guilty about "wearing it out". I have to make myself ride the others occasionally.
