Gasoline Disposal

My bike sat undisturbed for somewhere between 4 to 6 months before it was given to me. I want to drain the gas tank and put new gas. I called the local Auto Zone asking if they accept old fuel for proper disposal... made sense to me since they accept used motor oil... and the guy told me to dig a hole in the ground, pour the gas in it and light it. That seem right to you?

Any other recommendations on disposing old gasoline?

I mix old gas with new (50:50) and use it in my lawnmower.

I would just dump in one of my beater cars. It would therefor be blended with good gas and used.

No dumping it on the ground does not sound like the right thing to do and I am not even a tree hugger.

I burn it in my truck. It doesn't seem to care. 10 gallons of fresh gas with alittle old doesn't make any difference to it.

If I have old gas that I don't want to burn in anything (especially if it's two stroke premix), I take it to the local auto wreckers. They're happy to burn it in their yard trucks.

I would council very strongly against using gasoline to start fires (unless in a survival situation) - I worked as a nurse and saw the consequences of people trying to start bar-b- ques with petrol and its not pretty. 8O

Petrol (gasoline) is volatile (unlike parafin or white spirit) and will leave a low lying (heavier than air) vapour trail back to a container that can flash over. Also a little on some sticks or whatever can turn to a large cloud of vapour (especially in warm conditions) that will ignite when lit the sticks are lit - you may be standing in that cloud (possibly holding a can of petrol...). this is not a good thing when it goes 'whump'. :?

I've used gasoline on fires before, but I don't think I'd attempt it on a BBQ or fire I intended to eat off of... Just seems wrong.
