1991 Honda TRX200D Engine Swap

Hey Guys,
I have a 91 TRX200D that my father in law gave me to "fix up for the grand kids"

It looks like its been to hell and back. But as a GOOD son in law I can't just refuse stuff like that.

Anyway the thing runs but has a pretty bad low end knock. Has anyone swapped in a China motor in to something similar to this quad? I would much rather buy a new Chinese engine to swap into the thing for the same price as a 20 plus year old Honda engine on Ebay. Thanks for any tips, or pointing me in the right direction.

Never done a quad. I have a 300ex, which is similar.

Not certain, but looking at pictures of a trx200 the Chinese motors that use xr200 style mounts may drop in. Sprocket alignment and exhaust could be issues.
Hopefully some of the regulars here will know more than myself. I'm still working on my swap.

Thank you, I'm not really seeing an engine with the same options. Semi Auto, electric start, Reverse.

Based on a couple of quick Google images I found, it looks to have the same architecture as the XR200, as Chonda says. You can certainly find a CG200 China motor with a manual four speed plus reverse and electric start. You'd have to add a clutch lever and cable, but that's not a big deal. My quad has that setup.

Thanks to you guys. Guess I'll just get one and see what I can do with it. I mean as of now I have zero dollars in it. Do you think I can wire the new engine to the Honda CDI module?

Yes. My bike runs on the Honda CDI without issue.

It's also easy to install a China harness, which will allow you to run cheap China CDI's and coils. If the Honda CDI ever gives up, you can make that change for little cash.

I think the Taotao parts site sells the CG engine with reverse.
