ATV clutch question.
Alright all, I have a buddy that picked up a Baja Motorsports 250 cc ATV. It's the air-cooled model with an auto-clutch tranny The clutch operates similar to the Lifan 90-125cc horizontal motors. In other words, the clutch is disengaged as the shifter is pressed. The tranny has begun to become difficult to shift. Kind of feels as if the clutch is not disengaging all the way. If this bike had a normal manual clutch, I'd say needs an adjustment and that'd be it, but I'm not sure on the auto-clutch configuration. Any ideas? It's kind of grinding before engaging. The bike is no longer being ridden atm.[/i]

There should be an adjustment for that.
On my little honda 50 that I had years ago it had a slotted stud with a lock nut on one side that was used to adjust that if I remember correctly. |

That quad may have two clutches in it. One centrifugal and one that is a manual style, that still should have an adjustment for it. The adjuster screw may be on the outside of the case or it may be on the inside directly in the center of the manual styled clutch. He may also have burnt up the centrifugal clutch with his type of riding or the wrong type of oil in the engine. This is why I insist on Motorcycle approved oils only Nothing else, because the wrong oil will help burn up a clutch. I would need to see a picture of the right side of the engine to tell you what it has. A word of warning, Baja Motorsports vehicles my be difficult to get parts for.

Yep I know....Darned Pep-Boys bikes. Not mine though.I have yet to dig into the problem since I'm on vacation atm.

The Baja 250 is the same as a Yamaha Bear Tracker. All parts for the Bear Tracker will fit the Baja 250 except body parts. I bought a manual on ebay($3.00) for the Beartracker. The clutch adjustment is on the right side on the crankcase housing. It is a slotted screw with a nut to lock it. The adjustment is as follows. Back off the lock nut and turn the screw counterclockwise until you feel resistance, then turn it clockwise 1/8th of a turn. I have mine set like this and it is working good. This is the way the Baja manual and the Beartracker manual say to do it. Good luck
