2006 Lifan LF200GY-6..... Hey Jim...

Hi All

I thought Jim {our Moderator} may find this of interest as may others. Over the years we have seen many Chinese & other countries bikes come into the USA. I remember when Jim bought his Lifan "LF200GY-6". I had a guy call me the other day asking about parts for one here in Ohio. As many of you know I'm in Mantua, Ohio. Well we went through the VIN stuff and it's a Lifan motorcycle for sure, LF3 are the first 3 digits in the VIN. He explained the bike to me and I started looking on the China Lifan site, it sounded just like a LF200GY-6. Well he brought the bike to the shop yesterday... it took some time explaining on why parts would be so hard to get... but after I explained to him that even a per say a Honda or Yamaha that wasn't imported into the USA you couldn't get all the parts for it here. He told me he hasn't ever been asked so many questions just to get parts for a motorcycle, so I explained all of this to since he found me listed as a Lifan dealer and that, I still am.

So anyway, In the State oh Ohio Lives a 2006 Lifan LF200GY-6, with the last six digits 000001 making it the 1st. LF200GY-6 made in 2006. I must admit seeing one in person you really get to see the differences between the LF200GY-2, LF200GY-5 & the LF200GY-6. I must admit after seeing this bike in person I wish they would have imported the 200GY-6 instead of the 200GY-5.

What about the GY200-5A? Did you have an opportunity to stock those?

I guess Lifan imported some, the site says they will be restocked? I have yet to see one advertised anywhere and nobody has shown up on a forum claiming to own one, that I have seen.

The LF200GY-5A has not ever been imported to the USA as of yet.
I was told the LF200GY-5A was taking the place of the LF200GY-5 due to it {GY-5A} having a steel fuel tank. The EPA wouldn't let them import a Dual Sport/Enduro that had a plastic tank any longer.

Makes even me wonder, I know the LF200GY-6 has a steel tank, it's much better looking, and I think it would sell better.

I think the permeability standards for tanks is a work in process and has been for a while, I see no new regulations, but I could be just missing it, or the GY5 simply does not pass on it or they know it will not.. The use of plastic tanks has not been restricted. There are other models that have plastic tanks that have 2011 EPA certificates, at least thirty two to be exact. I say at least because some models are coded as â€œMâ€ or â€œPâ€ under tank material and many more models leave that field blank. That format or those fields go back to 2008 at least and half the data is left blank and none of the testing data fields has ever been propagated with values. In other words the entry or rating for "Fuel Tanks Permeation" is empty on all EPA models, it is simply blank, which leads me believe that they are about to regulate on it but have not yet.

The claim that they were not allowed to import those because of the plastic tank is questionable.

They have an EPA certificate on the GY-7 what are they saying about that bike, other then maybe October 2011?
BLFNC0.25GY7-001 LIFAN LF250GY-7, they have had an EPA certificate since the beginning of the year on the GY-7.

First: I'm not here to argue.

Second: This is off topic for this thread, you should have started a new thread.

Third: This was told to me by someone and I was told it has to do with bikes that are street legal, not racing or off road.

Fourth: I could care less what the EPA says in writing, they change things all the time to accommodate themselves to stop things from being imported.

I haven't seen mine in quite some time, but I did like it a lot more then the 5. As far as I know a steel tank is actually required here too, but then again, none of the China bikes other then the Konker/Qingqi, Saga, and now the 400's were really imported to Canada as street legal.

The only thing I didn't like about that bike over the 5 was the seat, the seat on it is pretty hard.

Oengus, I agree with Bruce. He started a thread on a specific GY-6, and it has drifted in a different direction. I appreciate your comments and knowledge about all kinds of China bikes, and I encourage you to start a specific discussion about EPA approvals, tank materials, etc.

I also thought the GY-6 looked better than the other Lifan, dual sport bikes, Bruce.

Did the owner tell you how he acquired a GY-6 in the United States? :?:

Yes he said he is the 3rd owner of the bike, he has no idea how it got here but It's titled & plated for the road. He is very happy with it so far, he picked it up for $600.00... Good price!

That is a good price, of course my perspective is based on the market here, but it's hard to go wrong for that.

That is exactly what I was thinking, but I'm not sure what year Canada received the first 200GY-6. I thought it was in 2008, but the distributor may have received them earlier than they started selling them.

Recently several members of these forums have acquired Zongshen 200GY-A motorcycles. To the best of my knowledge, the 200GY-A bike was never imported into the United States, so I must assume theses bike made their way across our southern border from Latin America.

Based upon Jim's photos of it, I always liked the looks of the Lifan GY-6. I don't want to sidetrack this thread, but I feel compelled to ask a few questions.

What is the current status of American Lifan? Do you have a tentative date for the arrival of the GY-5A bikes? If you have some inside information regarding these matters, I would love for you to start a new thread, and update us regarding the planned operations at American Lifan.

I think you're right that Coast to Coast didn't have the gy6 until 2008, but I don't know about the others.
