Bad Vibrations - 2006 Hi-Bird 200gy

Hey I just got this bike used last month and it has less then 200 miles on it. However as soon as you go over 3000+ RPM it vibrates so bad that cars look like ghosts in the mirrors. Also standing in neutral, and it is reved the vibrations will actually cause it to go backwards. Since this is my first bike and I am a new rider, I don't know what I should expect. I have done lots of work on my cars in the past, so I am not afraid to get down and dirty. I am also familer with loctite. So I am ready to tighten whatever needs it, but I don't know the terms well enough to know where to look. Good description and or pics would help alot!

James

A common issue is loose or broken motor mounts I'd look there 1st. I assume it is running OK otherwise?

Do you have a tach on that bike? If so does the vibration continue up at high RPM? How fast does it rev?

FastDoc hit it on the head, check the motor mounts... some bikes have had problems with the bolts just breaking or just having the wrong size bolts in place. It's an easy fix.

But it is just the nature of the beast too. Single cylinder bikes vibrate, there's not really a good way around it. Both my bikes are thumpers and they both have vibes at different RPMs... not being able to see anything in the mirrors is part of it. Without seeing your bike in person, it's hard to say if your vibes are normal... if your hands go numb after the first two miles or your feet get shaken off the pegs then I'd say it's a problem. If you get vibes in the mirrors, tank, grips, seat and/or pegs that come and go as the engine goes through it's revs... normal.

I performed the re-bolt mod on my 'bird right after I got my bike. After a few thousand miles, the vibration came back. Now, it vibrates worst than ever. My theory is that there's a manufacturer's defect with the frame that amplify engine vibration. So, get used to it.

Any bolts have more effect than others? Yesterday I tightened almost all except at the top of the motor.

Loctite and Fiber washers

Its normal for all of us, have done all i can to minimize from these guys wisdom, removing all the plastic helps! ha, I have decided to bedliner spray all plastic except front blue finder and rear tail piece to with black bedliner on all the side plastic. I am not reattaching the plastic ( ringing bell) gas tank cover as it adds many more places that can vibrate for little return, I might change tank later too, maybe a 2-4.5 tank.

get fresh broccoli at store to get that big rubber band, use it to keep your kick starter out of your way.

check all bolts if you want your teeth and get use to looking her over regularly for your own safety.

Is the thing where the bike moves backwards while leaning on the kick stand, no one on, and engine reved normal?

It was the top rear motor mount bolt on my gy5, not on the top of the cylinder head, but above the transmission at the rear of the motor.
