Thumbs Up Different kind of bike

A few weeks ago I received a large box from TxPowersports with a white TBR7
inside. It had been 3 long years sense I sold my last bike (a 2002 Triumph Sprint ST), and I really missed the freedom of being out on a motorcycle on a nice day, or going on a 1000mi adventure to a motorcycle camping area in the mountains. But after many years of riding large sport and sport touring motorcycles on all types of roads including many crowded interstates, I felt like their was just too many distracted drivers moving at high speeds to ride along side of them and my Triumph wasn't that much fun to ride slow to avoid the interstates.
A few days before I ordered my Chinese TBR7 enduro bike I found a picture of the motorcycle I rode while living in Costa Rica from 2003-2007. It was a Ninja looking bike called a Freedom 200, (also from China) that costs $2000 new because of the high local taxes. After I found a guy to custom make a smaller rear sprocket, it could do 60mph without the feeling that you were going to break it. I used that bike for everything from delivering food for my restaurant, to riding the 200mi round trip to the beach every Sunday. The speedo cable broke around 10,000mi., the rear shock needed to be re-welded, the headlight and tires also needed to be upgraded. BUT THAT WAS IT!

And I rode that 200 HARD because it was so much fun to get everything out of it and still not be going "too" fast. Even my Triumph would do 85mph in 2nd gear in about 5 seconds! and its a 6 speed! What fun is that compared to working every one of my 12 horses on tight windy back roads. As soon as I get to a straightaway, Ill be able to pull away from another rider (who I always seem to get into a race with) because I was able to found that guy to make that smaller sprocket for me so I could nearly hit 70! Those memories are my fondest motorcycle memories because they were real adventures where I was able to push my machine to its limits in relative safety.

An adventure isn't always motoring down the interstate at 3700rpm in total comfort on cruse control while having a computer tell you that all systems are go. You can spend $20K plus for that kind of adventure bike and get a wonderful motorcycle, but if thats the new definition of adventure, then the greatest travel adventure would be flying first class.

The TBR7 will be the first bike for me that I can actually take off the road. It is my goal to have many adventures on this bike. It will be MY adventure bike. So far I have added BMW auxiliary lights that blend with the bikes styling. Ive added insulated soft touch hard bags and custom aluminum mounting brackets that look factory in my opinion. I've added the larger jet and 17tooth front sprocket so the bike can realize more of it's potential. With the additional power over my Costa Rican bike (3-4hp), I'd like to add a 40T sprocket to the rear so I can cruse at 55 at an even lower RPM. I know that Ill be giving up some off road capabilities but nothing that I will miss. It will still be the best off road bike that I've ever had. I would also like to upgrade the fear shock for the occasional passenger and to firm it up in the curves. I would also be happy for any ideas on how to firm up the front shocks a bit.

I admire anyone made it this far into my introduction, Thanks and I would be grateful for any stories anyone may want to share.

Carl

Welcome Aboard! I run the 17/40 combo for street and 15/40 for off road. The front sprocket is an easy quick swap. You can cruising 60mph with no problems.

Welcome Carl....could you take spme pix of the bms lights and pix of the bike, and bags? Thanks for your story!!! Nice story!!! Thanks for sharing....

This website here, has kind, but utmost knowledgeable people on these bikes. Jerry, above is one of what I call the "masters". Ask any questions or share.

I mite get in trouble with moderators as this below is a little off topic....
I had some Canadian friends that bought a hotel in costa rica, and have lost track and touch with them. One time, they were in Island park, ID, and I took them snowmobiling. His wife had a personnel agency, I think in Calgary. The fellows name was Arnold. Also, when my folks were alive, they were going to buy a place to retire in costa rica. I will have to look that up and pm you.

thanks again for your story, and welcome here!!!!

Thanks Jerry Hawk and Wedooit for your feedback!

I like your idea of putting the 15t back on in the dirt, You sure have made a lot of modifications! I'm very interested in your center stand design! good thinking on all your designs.
Do you still have the info on the exact 40t sprocket you ordered? The ones I'm looking at don't call out the exact center hole diameter or the diameter that the 4 holes are drilled on.

Wedooit. thanks for the Costa Rica story and wish you had the name of the town and hotel. Most places down their will let you bring your bike inside the room because the floors are tile, and you can sleep better knowing your bike is safe!
I have a decent picture of my TBR7 if I can figure out how to attach it from my desktop./Users/Carl/Desktop/thumbnail.jpeg

Thanks, I found on another thread that the TBR7 uses the same sprocket as the Hawk.

I just finished the form to make a fork brace. If it is successful and does a nice job reducing the twisting of the forks ill let you know. I could always make more of them.

The fork brace made a big difference on my hawk.

I bought it from Amazon but currently out of stock. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was originally going to make one out of 3" wide aluminum flat bar but when this one came back in stock I went ahead and just ordered one.

I don't have much to add that Jerry didn't already cover. K will state that the infamous 17/45 us Hawk guys use is a great compromise ratio. It can still cruise along at 60 no sweat and offers decent torque for light trail use. If you live anywhere with a lot of hills the taller ratios may leave you wanting a bit.

Welcome to here! You already have, as weedoit calls it, the China Syndrome, as you mentioned your sport bike adventures in Costa Rica. Like Megadan said, you probably want a 17/45. I had a TMEC 200 dual sport that came stock with a 17 tooth countersprocket. Due to it, for some strange reason, using an oddball hub (vs. the very common Honda one found on most Chinabikes) the lowest numerical sprocket available was a 48 tooth. It was a step up from the 17/56 stock setup, but I had always felt a 46 would have been more ideal. With the 17/48, that bike could cruise at 60 to 65.
