Kayo 250 2 stroke
All.
Brand new here. Just bought a kt250 and want to upgrade the exhaust and reset. See it on YouTube but can’t figure out where or what to get. Any advise would be great. Thanks! |

Curious of your thoughts on the Kayo as you put time on it. They seem like decent bikes. I wonder how similar the Kayo and GPX are?

Looks like a fun bike. What are you hoping to gain in aftermarket pipe? Is there something lacking in performance with the stock pipe? Maybe rejetting will help improve performance?
I have a KTM 250SX. I am adjusting the power valve to drop the onset of the powerband lower (at the expense of high end hp-which is FIFTY hp). I think I can forego some top end hp. Do you have a power valve? Can you change the spring to open it up sooner? What is the top end hp ? Do you need that top end ? If you are racing, then you want the top end. Enduro/single track riding will demand more power/torque at the low rpm range to be manageable. I am tuning my 2 stroke for earlier torque and power because I am interested in low speed situations in single track and trail riding. I can buy a 300cc cylinder/piston kit for about $1000 to improve that low end even more. Is your engine based on the Yamaha 230?

The only pipe that is a straight bolt is a Kayo performance pipe and it's about $500. I bought a left over 2021 for $3,200 and have only owned it a few weeks. I ran into really nice people at a mx track about 2 hours away, they let me ride their bikes. One was a GPX and the other a KT250. Best guess is theirs had 20% - 50% more power over mine, they felt exactly the same in the suspension and weight. The GPX had the upgraded pipe but was not immensely power changing imo but both bikes were quicker/faster than mine.
Afterward I found my power valve's cables were binding and not adjusted correctly, once corrected it would probably give either bike a hard time. My jetting is vastly different than other KT riders seem to be running. Most run the main jet at 150-160, my main has ran best at 132 with the booster jet set at 1.5 turns out. My neighbor just bought a KX112 and is about 120lbs, my daughter is about 140lbs and rides a CRF150R and a KX85. I'm about 230lbs, my KT250 will take the KX85 in both acceleration and top end but the KX112 pulls away at a fast walk to a jog. The bike is VERY friendly and non intimidating to even beginner riders. My daughter prefers jumping the KT over her 150R or 85 and my 10 year old grandson also rides it on both track and yard. The bike is nose heavy on the track and the gearing has too much space between 2-3 and 3-4, switching from a 12 tooth to an 11 tooth hopefully will cure this (on order from China). The nose heavy is a plus on this two-stroke imo, a lot of 2S bikes try to loop out going up a jump face but this jumps more like a four stroke due to the docile engine and heavy front end. She still has enough engine and response to hold the front end up if deep in the power on short whoop sections. I'm old (61) and just now getting back into mx a little, may be more rider problem than bike. Before the power valve correction, I was displeased with the power as a CRF125F would give it a hard time but not so much now. It's a great trail bike and hope adapting a gnarly pipe will liven her a bit more. Best guess is 20-30 hp currently, was around 10-15 before the power valve correction. The DT230 was said to have 40, if I can get close to that this will be an amazing machine! I wanted a YZ250FX but his was easier on the pocket. |

They're basically the same. Honestly not a fan of gpx, I think my kayo k6 is just OK. It only lasted 20 hours before having to do major engine work. |
