Savage basic Mods
i gave my Savage pretty much the same basic
treatment that you give your Hawks, Storms, Ghosts, etc. I drilled out the exhaust for a little more volume and rpm. Six 1/4" holes in the rear plate. -The air box door came off, but the filter is still hidden and protected by the side panel. -lastly, I jetted up from 145 to 150 main. The air box mod made the most noticeable difference. It made the engine noise much deeper.

I used the 6 Sigma kit in the Ural. Good choice.

Running the stock Mikuni carb.
-I don't really know how to determine if a pilot jet change is needed, so I am still using the stock pilot jet. (I take plug readings for the main jet.) -I don't really plan needle spacers or other mods at the moment. It looks really difficult to re-install the "spaced out" needle and diaphragm. -the next thing I plan to do is another time-honored China Bike tradition - changing the gearing. A front pulley from a Kawasaki KZ adds three teeth to the front for lower rpm at cruising speed (currently 70mph) and possibly a higher top speed. -it requires a small amount of machining to make the KZ pulley fit a Savage. I can get a Machined KZ pulley for around 165 bucks.

I drilled out the mixture screw a few weeks ago to richen the idle mixture to prevent backfiring. Backfiring still persists though, sometimes at part throttle.
-I plan to install a larger pilot jet this weekend to hopefully reduce backfiring. We are supposed to have rain most of the weekend from a tropical low, so its not a good weekend to ride.

The pilot jet change didn't happen. I tried to remove the pilot jet without removing the carb and stripped the head of the plot valve.
-That pilot valve isn't coming out until the next time I remove the carb, and that will hopefully be a while. The good news is that the pilot valve is still functional, and I was able to take a nice ride to Brookshire today.

The DRZ comes with one of those POS's. When they fail, they fill your oil with gas. Changed mine also.

Vacuum petcocks work good on my scooter, but they can be bad news on a motorcycle.

Top half in the wind or the bottom half above the pipe? ;-)
Ya know, the more I look at your Savage, the more I like it. SUPER clean lines and look. Very tight, uncluttered design and flow to the bike, as a unit. Not a ton of odd stuff and things sticking out in the wind. Even the motor in the cradle doesn't even look like it's wired, or cabled. Pretty amazing, really.
