Mad Lifan KP250 turns off randomly

Hello Everyone,

I am having a strange issue with my motorcycle where 4/10 times when I start my motorcycle and turn on the DRLs/Headlights the motorcycle turns off completely.

This also happens when riding even at high speeds but also when the bike is parked but the engine is off but the electronics are on. So either way completely kills the motorcycle. I have to turn back the ignition key to start it again. The battery seems okay and the problem only occurs with DRLs/Headlight switch and not with the horn or indicator switch. Since the problem is not consistent not sure what can be the reason. Did anyone have a similar experience?

(If it's not clear bike completely shuts off, engine as well as electrical.)

I would look for loose connections on battery terminals, grounds and at starter relay. Also check all connectors to make sure they are plugged in together and not partially plugged.

Hello brother,
I checked and tighten the battery terminal, cleaned and reinstalled the starter relay, unplugged all the connectors cleaned them and then firmly installed them as well as the grounds.

The problem still seems to be there. I don't think any of this is an issue because let's say at one flick of the key this happens but the next 3-4 flicks it doesn't and then on the 5th the same happens. Just the number of flicks in between unsuccessful power-ons can vary.

One thing I would like to add here and which might state the problem better. Let's say I start my motorcycle with the light switch toggled on and flick the key. The motorcycle will keep running even if I toggle the switch back and forth unlimited times. But when I toggle the headlight switch on after turning the key. The problem only comes then. Can you think of something that can cause this behaviour?

That sounds like an ignition switch problem. Is this a new bike? If so contact the dealer you bought it for as the Lifans have a two year parts warranty.

Well, it's not new, it's a year old now but these motorcycles are imported here but I don't think the distributors here in my country will cover this in warranty. However, the ignition switch problem seems likely. Since I have a hard time putting the handle lock on as well. Will pay the distributors a visit soon and see what they can do about it. Thank you for the help sir

You were exactly right. Carbon gunk has buildup in the ignition switch that caused this issue. Taking the switch out, disassembling it giving a nice clean cleared the issue.
