Winter gloves

I'm in upstate Ny where it gets cold. Tonight is 10 degree. Any suggestion on some gloves that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

X2.

If you need to go out, slip on a pair of nitrile gloves while you're in the house (cheap at HF), and wait about 15 minutes. Once your hands become quite warm, put your winter gloves over top and head out. The nitrile gloves act like a wet suit.

It's not elegant, but it's effective.

I buy them at walmart since HF is an hour drive. Automotive section. Use them all the time for working on things. 30 pair is less the $5.

Warmest cheap option IMO is snowmobile/motorcycle MITTENS. Much warmer than gloves, and cumbersome but still decent mobility on the controls. On especially cold days toss 1-2 hand warmer packets in each mitten. They are about $1/pair and give off heat about 2 hours. The package says like 10 hours but that's bunk.

I can ride off road with this combination in the 20's in decent comfort.

Electric motorcycle gloves are the best but good ones are $250 with a heat controller.

BTW, I ride all year but be PARANOID on the street! Any ice/freezing fog, or even cold hard tires can put you in the hospital in an instant.

Hands and feet are two places where you don't want to be too cheap with the insulation. That can come back to burn you(sorry, couldn't help it). However, it can be done frugally. The latex glove trick as a liner works well, unless, like me, your hands sweat badly. If that's the case, your hands will chill quickly.

I have a pair a motorcycle specific lined winter gloves that are the catsass but are not that great below 20F.

Maybe silk liners would help but I've put the bike away for the winter.

Snowmobile mitts are great, especially if you can find the ones with the separate gloved index finger that allows better operation of the controls and you can move your index finger in the gloved portion when it gets chilled. Those tend to be more than a bit pricey, though.

What works for me, and YMMV because I use this set up for winter bicycling down to -20F, is a pair of polypro or silk glove liners inside pair of fleece lined leather chopper mitts. I will add the chemical heat packs when the temps drops below zero. I got the choppers at Gander Mtn for about ten bucks and the liners were another eight.

Tootsies need loving, too. But they are easier to deal with. GOOD leather boots. Insulated or not. Polypro or silk liner socks inside a pair of WOOL, not COTTON, socks. If you have enough room in your boots, a pair of neoprene socks between the boot and the wool sock will even help block the wind.

An alternative are battery operated heated socks. I've used these for winter bicycling, snow shoeing, and CC skiing. They work but they eat batteries. Come to think of it, they might even work as glove liners.

Probably more than you wanted to know.

Ok...it gets as low as the low 30s (yes, Faranheit) in Yuma on my morning commute...without going electric, what gloves would be best?

Nitrile gloves with mittens sounds like an effective combination. Keep your core warm, and you extremities will stay warmer as well.

I also suggest you install some heated grips on your bike. I really like the Tusk Grip Heater Kit. I have these grip heaters installed on both my Zong ,and my XR650L.
