issue with clutch burning out Typhoon 125cc

Hi All, I'm hoping to get some help with a Chinese ATV that I bought second hand. After a little bit of work the engine fires up great and purrs like a cat. When I put it in gear and gave it gas the ATV wouldn't move. I bought a new clutch and installed. the ATV ran fine after the clutch install but it it smell a little like i was burning oil. My 8 year old was riding it around the house at low speeds off and on for about an hour when the same issue with the atv not moving came up again. I drained the oil and it was very dark. I filled with fresh oil but that didn't;t solve the issue. I can't believe he could burn a clutch in such a short amount of time. Any ideas what it could be? If i did burn out the clutch - any ideas what would cause that so I don't make the same mistake? I'm generally handy with fixing things but this is my first ATV project so any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks Mike
