Added a Rhino 250 to the Family

Hello all,


Pulled the trigger on a new Rhino 250 and just brought her home yesterday. A lot of great info on this site which helped me on my decision. I have some mods in mind but first I want to get that oil out and put some synthetic in her.

Look forward to coping all of your great mod ideas, keep them coming lol!!

Congrats! So far, my Rhino has been a really good quad for our needs, once it was set up and modded correctly.
I know everyone has their own oil preferences but you may want to break it in on some Shell Rotella 15W-40 before going to the synth. I've always heard the synthetic is too slippery for break-in.....but oil preferences are like.... Everyone has one. ;-)

Thank you for the heads up, I'll start with the Shell 10w-40. How soon should I change the oil again after switching to shell?

The 15W-40 is the diesel stuff and works great with the wet clutches....but any JASO MA oil should work fine. Made for wet clutches.

Since the Rhino doesn't have a trip meter, I'd say 10 hours should do it. I still run the 15W-40 in almost everything. Seems, at least in my experience, these China quads and bikes like the regular stuff better than the synth. I got more clutch chatter out of the synth. Again, that's just my experience though. You may have a different experience. If my rigs like the cheap stuff better, I'm not going to argue! ;-)

On the other hand, seems my big bikes really loved the synthetic. Easier neutrals and quieter running. Noticeable difference.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it. My cruiser loves the synthetic oil, that's why I was automatically going in that direction. I'm in agreement with you, if the cheap stuff works, then the cheap stuff is what I will give her.

Congrats on the Rhino. I followed 2LZ's advice on the oil when I got mine. Works well... no problems. Clutch works well with it too.

Thanks Darth, I absolutely plan on following 2LZ advice. Now that I look back at my old post, I said 10w-40 but I meant 15w-40.....

Welcome, and enjoy. One big recommendation is at least change the rear sprocket to 37 tooth. Made a world of difference on mine.

You got that right Widowmaker....and RnR, be warned, the quad will ride like a rigid until the shocks wear out...but that only takes about a week ;-)

Oooooooooh the infamous BLACK version. Have to say RocknRoman I pictured you a bit taller. Don't think you will every break those shocks in with your weight.

Darth, that is actually my mini me, add a couple of feet and about 225 lbs to him and you have me lol. Those shocks are going to get a workout lol.

Great site!!! No China bashing and like minded peeps! My boy and I have a Roketa 150 type 56 (for me) and a Coolster 125 (for him). Bought them in 2013 and both are still on the road...changed carbs, ignition switches, sprockets....the usual suspects. Going to fix em up one last time and stash them for guests coming to our desert oasis in AZ. We're expecting two black Tao Tao 250 Rhinos this Monday and can't wait to put em together! I did want to put synthetic oil in them...change to an NGK plug and a beefier ignition coil wire. I hear there is no fuel cut off so I will use that as an excuse to install one with better fuel lines and a better fuel filter. KnN type air cleaner will top off Phase 1 of mods that will take place before the engine is cranked. Any opinions on running a fuel additive like 104+ Octane Boost?
