Hiya. Can't go wrong with an MSF course. Those did not exist when I started riding but I took an advanced riders course a few years ago that showed I picked up a few bad habits over the decades. Those have since been cured.

I haven't ridden in about fifteen years because of raising kids and bills and stuff but my boy is now getting the age to start. I found that there are several state lands local to us that we can go camping and riding on before he gets his license. He spent 3 hours taking a course so he can get a riding certificate. I picked up a couple for PSM bikes and look forward to hitting the trails with him. I have always been a street rider and I look forward to this.

I bought the Hawk 125cc for my kid and the Templar M 250cc for myself over the Thanksgiving holiday because the price was outstanding. Shipped they were both less than 3k which made them a great Christmas present. I am kind of kicking myself for not getting the X because of shock difference which I didn't see at the time of ordering. I only saw the 5spd vs 6spd and figured since I would be mostly using it on the trails I wanted the 5spd. I guess it was an impulse buy. I may just try to list the M on CL and buy a X once its sold. I am still waiting on the MSO's and figure it will be easier to sell with title in hand.

I have lived all over the US and traveled to most of the states. I am pretty handy and do a lot of my own work on things like the house and car. I build my own computers, do a lot of video gaming, and work in IT. My son and I have been working on a 60's Rupp gokart, as we can find parts, which hasn't been easy, we have had to fabricate a lot of our own. We like to go to National Parks to go camping and figured having a couple of bikes would be fun for exploring this coming summer on vacation. That's about it for me... I am new to enduro's and hope people still wave when you go brrrapping by.

I want to take one before I take possession of my bike. I read online that non-trained (self-taught) motorcycle riders make up about 80%+ of all motorcycle accidents. That is a scary statistic and one which made me take pause and do a google search for motorcycle safety courses in my area.

Welcome! You guys will love riding together. It's been a blast for me to grow up in the late 80s around dirtbikes and ride all my life and then introduce my 13yo son to riding 2 years ago and eventually progress him off a 140cc DBX1 to a street legal Brozz 250 (plated in my name) that he rides alongside me on gravel roads and paved country roads. Don't beat yourself up about the M, remember anything and everything can be upgraded with parts fpund online and in some cases from Japanese bikes, and then be better that expected. I recall reading zx10 rear shock being used in a Chinese bike application, can't recall which one, but perhaps with a little fabrication if you did do something like that it would blow away the suspension that comes stock on the X.. food for thought

Sorry to here. That's one reason I have mention several times on the forum that the Templar is technically not street legal and of off road use only. Yes there are many members on here that have gotten them registered and tagged just like most of us have done with the standard Hawk. You could of easily printed up a NHTSA sticker and probably would of passed. I noticed you mentioned in another post that the VIN had the Letter "i". Make sure you don't have the wrong information and may have been a L or 1 .

NHTSA regulates the importation of a “motor vehicle,” which is defined in the controlling statute (49 U.S.C. 30102) as “a vehicle driven or drawn by mechanical power and manufactured primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways.” Vehicles (such as racing bikes, dirt bikes, or ATV’s) that are not “primarily manufactured for on-road use” do not qualify as motor vehicles, and may be lawfully imported without regard to whether they were originally manufactured to comply with all applicable FMVSS. Vehicles that are not primarily manufactured for on-road use may be entered under Box 8 on the HS-7 Declaration form to be given to Customs at the time of entry. To support a Box 8 entry, the importer must furnish Customs with a substantiating statement to establish that the vehicle was not primarily manufactured for on-road use.

The MCO will state Motorcycle because the Dealer fills out the the MCO with whatever they want.

The label to register must state for highway use. DMV will not give you plates for this:

What is i in vin mean?


Also for web sites I prefer the actual governments websites for information rather than 3rd party websites.

The listed requirements:

• Legally assigned Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO)
• Bill of sale, or purchase agreement
• Completed Application for Iowa certificate of Title (form 411007)
• Odometer Statement (form 411077)
• Damage Disclosure(form 411108) (only required if brand new vehicle has over 1000 miles)

Nothing on there about NHTSA use plate requirements, on the PDF goverenment form there is no requirement box or listing. Is there an inspection required and the company doing the inspection is telling you this? Or someone on the internet?



I have hear of some folks with persnickity DMV employees that they thought they could not register due to a bad dealing with an employee. They then went months later and dealt with a different employee (different DMV office?) and they got their bike registered so there is also that.

It is riveted on. How hard could it be to grind off the rivets, and remove it for an upgrade. I have a pop rivet tool
