KPX 250 Supermoto Wheels

I am determined to get some Supermoto wheels put on this KPX. I know some Old Ninja 250 rims or CBR 250 rims might fit with some back yard machining. I keep look at ebay for a used set. I cannot help to think it would be a waste to toss the KPX wheels. They may be the highest quality part on the whole bike

Now I think I could build a set of rims, and reuse the hold hubs, brakes and cush drive. In reality, this is probly the best way to go, as we know these parts fit, and it will retain all the proper geometry. No kacking togther spacers, or grinding brake rotors down.

I am trying to build a shopping list and I believe the sizes I am shooting for are

3.5x17 Front Wheel
4.25x17 Rear Wheel
110/70-17 Front Tire
150/70-17 Rear Tire

The only place I seem to find wheel hoops is on aliexpress, does anyone know of a place to locate some state side? seems there should be some local. I would like find some in colors, maybe Red.

I also need to locate some spokes, and determine a length. I will also need the rubber piece to cover the spokes, and some tubes.
Anyone here have any idea on how to get a proper spoke size without ripping apart the wheel and test fitting it?

I’ll be following you on this for sure. I’ve only had the lace my own wheels up for 17” supermoto on my existing hubs in my head as a thought but never took it past a thought stage to actually starting investigating sources and pricing information.

No need to link me, I have no interest in the KPX as I don't own one. Just looking to see if it matches with options I know of, which unfortunately it doesn't.

There is a possibility that the Motomax 250 wheel set would work with the KPX. Unfortunately, information is limited on any of the specs of that bike, either here or online.

After digging for a few days, I cannot seem to find hoops at a reasonable price, let alone the other parts to rebuild the rims. I did find these sizes on AliExpress but the hoops alone would be around 300 shipped to me, and does not include the spokes or nuts.
The next best option I found would be to buy the cheapest set of new supermoto rim kit on eBay (around $425), and just replace the hubs with those from the KPX. This is taking a chance that the spokes would be the correct length/size. It's also assuming I would be able to true up the rim properly. I, myself have never done so. It doesn't look that hard, just time consuming assuming you have the proper tools.

I just placed an order for some Ninja 250 rims, rotors and cushdrive. I also went ahead and picked up the axles from the same bike, mainly because the seller was including the spacers on the axles and they were only a few bucks. I still need tires, but that can come later. All in less than $200 (again without tires) shipped to my door. Not bad. I believe the sprocket is at least the correct size.

Ill keep posting updates as I try to adapt parts over. I may try to use as much Ninja parts as possible as Kawasaki stuff is actually more available and cheaper.

I did a few years in a motorcycle restoration shop and truing wheels was something I found to be very satisfying and enjoyable.


Take your time, make small changes and keep the specs handy. It really is quite straightforward once you get a pair or two done.



I actually picked up a truing stand (had to surrender ALL tools on a move to Hawaii) so I can do it again for myself and others.

So,... I am speaking totally out of ignorance. But, I am wondering why the wheels have to be 17" front and rear. I searched supermoto's and can see that they are typically 17's or so. Is it a bad thing if you had the stock wheels with street tires? I also searched stock tire sizes and found that there are street tires for the stock wheel sizes.

So now my question becomes this: Why can we not use the stock wheels and put street tires on them?

Is it just for aesthetic reasons or is there something mechanical or scientific I am missing?

Smaller wheels
Supermotos typically run smaller, 17” wheels front and rear, unlike dirt bikes which usually have larger wheels at the front than the back. Supermoto wheels are smaller chiefly to give the bike a lower centre of gravity and reduce weight, improving the handling on tarmac.

Seems that a Hawk or Hawk-like bike will not really fall into the tarmac performance category. I would not be worried about all that speed for cornering and/or hooning. MPG's while commuting or running errands? Yup. I get that. Just for looks is cool too, they do look good. I think because of all this, I will not pursue supermoto wheels and just find out how much stock parts are to see if that'd be worth it for commuting then knobbies on the weekends.

seen this on you tube. this guy did it with ninja rims and when i searched "hawk 250 supermoto wheels" to find this video i seen some from other people but this is a full build vid so hope it helps.

Here is my KPX path to Super Moto: Not going to deal with other fitments, but I will instead learn how to wind spokes! I already have the balance stand, so will add a reference pointer.

Your Hoops have arrived! Spoke size/length are TBD, but at least these match the KPX spoke config of 36 both front and back. As I figure out more, I'll post which spokes to buy etc. Living the dream.
