Cold clear day. Good ride.
I got to ride The Beast after work today. Upper 20's no wind and sunny. A great day for a ride. Bundled up in my cold weather gear I was comfortable. Without an electrical system on The Beast I could not use my electric gloves, relying instead on motorcycle specific mittens with hand warmers, It worked well.
In the last picture you can see some snow on the hilltops, about 2,000 feet. At it's deepest it was only an inch or two and had little effect on the bikes traction. Scared me a few times though.

Looks like a cold wind was blowing on your face. Be careful riding alone, Doc; we don't want to read about you in the papers.

I'm glad you got to go riding, Doc.
It minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit as I write this reply. Even if the trails weren't covered in deep snow, and closed for the winter, I wouldn't go out riding in these temperatures. 8O I am awaiting the arrival of spring. Spud

Weld, I had my shield open as it wasn't too cold and it felt good . Also keeps my glasses from fogging. No wind lately.
It was a very conservative ride, and not far from civilization at all. Pretty tame/safe. I just needed to ride! As you all have said, at least it's getting lighter longer. Spring might come, but who knows... Record cold in California, and it's no bargin in the Pacific Northwest, and Spud will verify no GW in the Intermountain West/Western Rocky Mountains.

When you fell (not if, when), that track might tear up your leg pretty bad. 8O I think a snowmobile would be safer. Spud

That did not occur to me.
Snowmobiles can be pretty safe depending on how and where you use them. The important thing as you have stated is to never ride too far off the beaten trail alone. If the machine dies in the cold, so does the rider 8O . I'm pretty sure if I lived in an area where it snowed I would have a snowmobile. Two probably as a 'buddy sled. Look how inexpensive they are: http://kpr.craigslist.org/mcy/3515142442.html

I wonder if it would be legal to ride a plated D/S with a track kit through town?
That would be too cool. 8)

Man I'd want one just for that! :P
That would decrease my hatred for winter by 50%.
