As long as the gear ratios are spot on, overdrive isn't necessary if you get the primary ratio right as well.

Right. Why bother doubling one step if there's a 50% chance you're going to be doing it over anyway.

With a suggestion from a contact on another forum, Plan B has become Plan B 2.0. I am dumping CVT and gearboxes entirely and going hydrostatic. Why?

I work on hydraulic systems daily and know how to do it.

I have access to everything I need to do it.

Save for the drive motor, I can mount components anywhere I want to.

Okay, I gotta go dig in my stash.

With the Hydrostatic idea you could mount the engine like you would with the CVT to put the starter towards the middle of the frame correct? Allowing you to push the motor back further in the frame and minimize the stretch needed if any?

Heck, I could mount the engine longitudinally if I wanted.

I'm doing some research on what my limits are to go hydrostatic. With 6.5 hp, those limits are pretty low, 5gpm@2000psi, but I can work with it.

The valving is going to take some thought. I want P to A in the neutral (run) position and P to T in the active (neutral) position. In English, when I pull the clutch lever, oil goes from the pump straight back to the oil tank, when I release the clutch lever, oil goes from the pump directly to the hydraulic motor.

So if i am understanding it correctly it will function much like the clutch would have on the original bike. pulled in to freewheel and disengage. Release to engage and take off.

stupid question Sir Fromage, but is a clutch really necessary with the hydro? i ask because i am familiar with them from working on hydro lawnmowers, they dont use a clutch, but a variable swashplate displacement pump to control the oil, and have a basic bypass valve for the motor if you need to push it (aka trueish neutral) where the actual neutral position is just the pump not changing displacement at all, so no flow to the motor....

Good question, and you are correct, but I don’t have the necessary horsepower to run a variable flow pump.

TBH, I like the idea of going hydro but I am giving it a serious Pro vs Con look and Con looks like it may be winning.

there is always a pump out there that will run with your HP... Honda walk behind mowers come with an available variable hydrostat, as do their snow blowers... the question is will you achieve the flow rates to achieve the speed you desire...

Hp wise, the max flow the stinker can handle is 5.7gpm. That’s not even enough to run one of our railsaws.

Em-Maybe. I’m going to ignore the problem until the Monday after Easter. Taking a well earned week off then.

Yeah, I wouldn't think that would be much power for a hydrostatic motorcycle. Honda actually made one, called the DN 01... It was dreadfully ugly.

It’s starting to look like no. I was on the phone with my buddies at the local hydraulic shop and the shuttle valve I need would be a custom job for lotsa lotsa money. On par with a Harley box.

Looks like I’m getting a Comet 30 CVT anyway.

Would a double-drive setup on a jackshaft make sense?
