Got out yesterday to check out some new claims to prospect on.. really got a lot of use out of the Rhino and put a lot of miles on it. Lots of creek crossing, rutted logging roads, and some nice graded gravel roads..... nice to be able to open it up.

That's forum member AtomicWedgie at Sandlake, OR last week. For the long-term forum members, that used to be TurboT's quad.

Shaking the dust off this thread…
Did another trip to the mountains with the Scout Dads and did some more riding. Things were going great and the quads were getting some use. One of the Dads (Doug) and myself went for a ride and were almost back to camp when Doug did a couple donuts in some loose gravel. I turned around just in time to see him hit the asphalt of the road while in a mid donut…… He got whipped over to his right and off the quad while the quad ended up on its side. Here he is after I helped him to the quad and he was figuring out how to get back on. He had good flexibility but couldn't bear any weight. His helmet will need to be replaced, it did it's job.

Sent him home that night for an ER visit. Looks like a tear in a tendon or two and a lot of physical therapy is in his future. His wife has forbid him from riding with me again, lol. Quad has a couple of scratches but I did find out it will keep running while laying on its side.

Ouch! Well at least he had some fun while it lasted. You know how it is, us old guys think we're still 20 something. Hope he has a fast recovery so he can get back out there and do it again. lol At least he wasn't trying to jump a school bus like my buddy. And no he didn't jump it. He chickened out at the last minute.

I tried doing a doughnut on the minibike and ended up dumping it.. never tried it on the atv.. after seeing that mishap probably wont. Hope he recovers quick.
Almost forgot to post this pic.. was out with the Rhino a couple weeks ago prospecting.. It got me pretty deep in.. not much of a trail around but was still fun. The damn thing was painted in iron stained clay by the end of the day.... made a massive mess out of the car wash when I cleaned it off... LOL for what they charge didn't feel bad about it.. cost me $5 just to hose it off... better there then in my driveway though. |

I made the mistake of doing doughnuts on the Coolster 150. Bad idea. No accidents here because I've had many years of racing 3 wheelers. Right after I had done some doughnuts I caught my daughter trying to do some and almost flipped it. Not long after that we got the UTV with seat belts and full roll cage.

Swampy, I'm glad you mention helmet. If you noticed my buddy(not the brightest bulb on the tree) for 2 days refused to wear a helmet and this was the 1st time ever to ride an ATV. Well at the end of day 2 he was following my daughter and I on the trails. We both looked back to make sure we didn't loose him. After we made a sharp turn We stopped and waited him but he never showed up. We turned around to go look for him. when we got to the curve we stopped and turned off the engine and started calling for him. Well needless to say he was at the bottom of a riverbed about 40 ft down. I got to the bottom and asked him what happened. He said the chain came off right before the turn and he panicked and couldn't stop. He had scrapes all on his face and arms from going through the bushes. Needless to say he wore his helmet after that. He was lucky. I popped the chain back on and drove it back up the hill for him.

JerryHawk,
Your buddy was very fortunate not to have been hurt worse than he was trailblazing like that. Out of control without a helmet wouldn't be fun. Here in Ca. it’s the law to wear a helmet (shouldn’t be) but we would wear them anyway. Saw a guy get a stub for riding from the loading ramp to his camp 30 yards away. I probably wouldn’t have put one on for that either…… Darth, awesome picture of your Rhino, love the lighting and background. Boon docking is always fun. Just before I took this picture I asked him if he wanted to go for another ride..........

Most of the ATV parks in Louisiana require helmets which I have no problems with. At 18 I managed to split a helmet after laying motorcycle down, hitting a car and went flying for about 30-40 ft. The helmet saved me from splitting my skull.

I was doing mad donuts two weeks ago at Sandlake in Oregon. The radius was about 30 feet and I had it pinned in third gear. AtomicWedgie said I was carrying the inside rear tire about two inches off the ground when I really got moving. I was churnin' up the sand as I came around towards the ocean, and that's when the tide rolled in. CODE BROWN! It's really hard to slow the quad down from a full throttle drift and avoid the waves. I managed to slow it enough to get just a little splash from the tide, but AtomicWedgie was convinced I was going to go ass over tea kettle into the drink.
If you're over 16, you don't have to wear a helmet there. We did, until it was time to ride over to the loading ramp.
