Has anyone replaced their stock air box with a pod filter?

If you can find a mix of components that would make that work you’d be the first-there is very little room in there to do so.

Ideas for items to add to Templar X resource guide:

- Best chain upgrade (Amazon link)
- Tire suggestions for someone who rides on-road more than off-road (70/30)
- Oil cooler (has anyone added one yet?)
- Pictures/instructions for re-jetting stock carburetor and shimming needle
- Correct bolt/screw sizes for the stock carburetor

Chain-RK standard. Inexpensive, bombproof. I've run them on all of my bikes for a while now. O-ring chains are a waste of money, IMO. They may last a little bit longer (depends on the chain), but they drag too much for my taste-especially on low HP bikes like ours. I actually put a brand new O-ring chain on my Templar X right out of the crate, never ran the stocker. A lot of drag going through the chain guide. I ordered a $25 RK standard like I run on my other bikes for it, much better. Clean and lube it once in a while, I'll need sprockets before the chain craps. I'll save the O-ring chain for my street tracker build.
Kenda K270 as a 70/30, K271 as an 80/20ish tire. 271 is excellent on the street, and not awful on hardpack. Shinko 700 70/30 is good. Tusk D Sport as a 50/50, better off-road.
IMHO, of course.

For your resource guide I would say between the posts from Thumper and I you should have all the photos and instructions you need for the re-jetting and shimming of the carburetor and the size replacement bolts for the ones that need removing as well as removing the aluminum air pilot adjustment screw plug for your resource guide. I mostly just added mine to Thumper's separate post on the subject and then have other build photos and details on my own post.

The safest chain size to recommend without knowing what sprocket sizes people are changing to would be the 120 link RK SO chain.

Tires I have not worn my factory OEM knobbies out yet. I had originally planned for 70/30 Shinko 705 Series Dual Sport Tires for a name brand tire. For a cheap no name tire from Amazon I don't know, I have not studied any of the off-brand tires yet.

I've run Shinko 705's on my Suzuki V Strom 1000 for years. Great tire on the road, but I'd steer clear if you plan on riding dirt much. Kenda K761 is great on small bikes if you ride a lot of pavement, Shinko 700 if you're planning on a little more dirt. I've run them both at some point. My Templar will be heavily dirt biased, so I'll likely put Tusk D Sports on mine soon. I really like Dunlop D606's, but they don't last long at all. D Sports aren't bad, a little greasy on the street-but they last for a while.

Thought I would post pics of a Templar x cat slit open and removed I found on FB. That thing has got to be restrictive.

They're rarely as restrictive as everyone thinks they are but removing it might free up a horse. More with a cam, porting, etc. I like the way it was done with a single cut. It makes it so much easier to keep perfect alignment when welded back together. Looks like I need a MIG welder and some practice pipe.

Whether it winds up being 1hp or 2hp from removing that cat, it is definitely felt in the seat of the pants as i can attest when the pipe was replaced on my Brozz. I look forward to doing it on the TempX.. wish they had a replacement header that fit on Amazon

Hypothetically, if it does improve flow, then running a bigger carburetor and jetting appropriately should yield even more...right?

The replacement carb listed in the Templar 250 resource guide is not available for purchase on Amazon, and it's a 30mm. Wouldn't the carb I have listed below be the better choice? It is a 28mm (just like the stock Templar 250 carb) and it's available for purchase:

Oh No Nix on the pod filter idea

I have seen posts here where people ask if anyone has tried a pod filter on the Templar X. I don't know about the Templar and Templar M, but the carb on the Templar X aims at the rear shock spring, and there just isn't any room for a pod filter.

But, the snorkel has a nice smooth internal surface that snakes around to a VERY LARGE opening with a BIG OILED DOME FILTER. I don't think a pod filter would be better even if you COULD get it in there! In fact, a pod filter might be more restrictive. That dome filter offers a lot of surface area and it is very porous. Air must flow past that dome filter quite freely, and the large surface area allows for good filtering as well.

I think the answer is to keep the dome filter clean, and replace it if it gets too fouled to clean.

If you install a different carb, good luck on mating the snorkel. If you changed your carb, have you got a picture of this????
