Yeah, I'm a fan of synthetic. Loved that Rotella T6 in my VW turbo diesel. I got synthetic from Walmart, their house brand, for the engine. And their house brand synthetic Mercon V too. I guess it's Supertech.
Anyway, today, my project was to install the intake manifold. I was examining the old one carefully, because it's plastic, and saw a problem. The aluminum crossover pipe gasket on the passenger side was blown out. So I opened it up. Not pretty. Plastic was broken around the inside edge. No gasket on that side, just filled with silicone. I am now going to go back to the all aluminum non PI intake. I tapped and plugged the rear hole where the water line for the heater is. And, went and bought a fitting for the front, where a plug had been installed. Ordered the older style gaskets as well. Glad I'm friends with the Napa guys... This manifold has a weird electric flap built into the front of it. Anyone know what that does? My harness doesn't have that electric plug. Can't see it harming anything tho. Seems to redirect air through the giant plastic plenum, underneath the manifold. Got the oil drained out of transmission pan, and new filter back in. Had the reusable gasket. That's a cool thing. Ok, so 2 steps forward 1 step back, but a little further along. I am actually happy about the aluminum manifold. I've had to replace those plastic ones before, when I was working in a garage. Junk is what they are.

Ok, so it's called the IMRC, or, intake manifold runner control. So, it converts the runners from long to short, and vice versa. It's naturally closed, so, I guess short runners. Sooo, now I have to figure out, is the engine going to run correctly with that closed, or should I put it in the open position? Hmmm... more complications...

Ok, now I see it's actually called an Intake Manifold Tuning Valve. The PI engines didn't have it but the earlier ones did. Looks like some people are cutting the valve off and sticking the cover back on. I may do just that.

Interesting concept, but I think I'd delete it.

Supposedly it stays closed to 2800rpm. Gives better torque at the lower
Rpm's. Then opens and gives better torque above 2800. But since I have no wiring for it I have to decide to have it open or closed

Woo hoo hoo hoo! Intake on! Alternator, radiator assy and a few hoses, And some fluid, and this thing should fire.
The aluminum intake was identical except for the rear heater hose, and the pcv vacuum port was slightly smaller. I modified my hose end and got it to work. I'm really happy that I have the aluminum one. Should never have any issues with cracking. The IMTV worries me somewhat, but will see what happens. It should run great up to 3000rpm anyway. If it's weird above that I may have to take it out. I wonder if the computer has the capability to open it and maybe just a little wiring would make it work? I'll have to investigate pinouts.

Maybe dissect or research to see if you can wire the IMRC actuator to a manual switch? Or maybe eliminate it and run a cable to control it? Or just drive it in each position and see which works better for you and leave it there.

I've pulled engines with the dreaded green pistons as well.

This truck must have had waves of muddy Texas river water cascading over its engine. There was also a legitimate rats nest under that manifold. Had my tetanus shot. I'm current.
