how to check coil?

How do I check my coil? you mean check it like the voltage and stuff? Where is the coil located on my bike? What does the coil look like? My spark plug looks clean.

Your ignition coil will likely be mounted underneath your fueltank. Check to see that the power and ground connections are free of corrosion and that the wire is in good shape. I found that my coil had a connection problem and I fixed that up and it now has solid blue/whit spark. Is it possible to get the bike running at all? Check your spark when it's cold and again when it's hot. This will help you nail down if your coil or plug lead has gone south on you. You may also want to spray the coil and plug lead with water from a spray bottle. I check cars like that all the time at work to check for misfires.

Phil

ps - Is your air filter clean?

coil

I will check the coil thouroughly. No, I cannot get the bike running at all. My battery is new and now it seems like it cant hold charge. The last time I check my spark it had a good blue spark. My Air Filter is very clean and I have new carb.

Hey, Michael.
Just read through the topic again and I'm hitting the wall, too.
It really sucks when everything you check seems to be OK and the thing still won't start (been there, done that too many times in the past).

Any ideas on what you can "rule out" as the possible problem?
The bike needs fuel, air and ignition sources and for them to meet together at the right time.
There's been plenty of times I've had to go back to square one, focus on one potential issue and trace it down to make sure it is correct.
Then you go after the next piece.

We've thrown a lot of different advice at you (all good) but maybe clouding the view a little by trying to get at it all??

Phil has a good idea to check the coil for the proper spark.
Start there, make sure the coil is dry and all the connections are tight.
Good, hot spark: Yes> go to air source and so on.

Good luck, if any fresh ideas hit me, I'll post.
Bill

just answer .com

I'm desperate talking to this so called motorcycle mechanic expert on justanswer.com. I have to pay of course. This is the latest stuff he wants me to check out below. . $15 advice. What do I know.
-------------------------------------------------------
You mentioned that the spark
looked good, correct?

Was the new carb jetted for your
bike?

Have you tried drying the engine and plug
out completely, turn off the fuel
and when all is dry then see if
the starting fluid works.
Also do the compression test
with your finger.

Is there any fuel or water in your
oil? Does it look thin?
------------------------------------------------

I don't know what size jets are in my new carb. Dude wants me to stick my finger in spark plug hoel and start engine to see if theres compression. I'snt that dangerous???

expert?

Heres the last of what the expert told me to do. cost $25

Ideally it should be running
to do the jetting.
You go by the spark plug color,
if it is black you try
a smaller jet until you get
a nice brownish color
after a quick run.
http://verrill.com/moto/sellingguide...colorchart.htm

when you say "fuel is coming out
of the float bowl" do you mean
the drain or can you see
fuel somewhere?
The float bowl hose is hanging
open and down correct?

-I would dry the engine out and
charge the battery.

-Check compression.

-Use a clean good plug and
try the starting fluid
to see if it fires.

-is there a choke and is it working
okay?

If the engine has compression,is dried out and
the plug is dry and has a good spark and it
still won't start with starting fluid then
it may have either a compression
problem or a timing problem.
This could be the ignition or
valve timing. This you may need
a mechanic to check out for you
as it could get complicated.
--------------------------------------------------------

A new for my bike is $550. I'm getting burnt out.

Other than "the go to a mechanic" we told You all that for free
It might be time to let cooler heads prevail and just pay 50 or so bucks to have it diagnosed.

?

Thats the problem man. There isn't even a local shop who will take my bike. I am looking in yellow pages for a shop that works on our bikes in cities several hundred miles away and no luck.

My question is. Is this bike fixable without having to buy new engine or something over the wall like that? I'll keep working at it. I don't know about stickin my finger in the spark plug hole when starting it though.

DB-27 running

Now I'm really confused. I got the old DB-27 running!!! I put stock carb, exhaust and air filter back on, adjusted valves and it started right up.

I know I can do something right. I cant seem to get the brand spanking new bike running.

Not really. You just need to press your thumb over the spark plug hole and turn the engine over with the starter. If it forcefully pushes your finger off the hole you have good compression. If you can hold your finger there without much pressure then the compression is weak and you need to find out why.

You should be able to borrow a compresion tester from an auto parts store also. Its a little less subjective as well.

compression

I put my thumb in spark plug hole and started bike and it almost blew my freakin hand off. So compression is good. I put my hand over carb throat opening and turned bike over and it almost suck all my fingers off. So Vacuum is good. Since bike was thouroughly muddy I will meticulously clean all electrical wires. How can I test ignition coil? Can I use one of those hand held voltage meters?

Also, I took carb off again and it has the same jets as old carb and there was plenty of fuel in the float bowl. I will change oil again.

If it still don't start I found a shop in Sacramento, California, 3 hours away that will try and fix $80/hr. In mean time I can ride my old DB-27 which I got running. Its confusing why my new bike wont run and my old DB cranked right up after I fixed it. Thanks for all the help dudes. Your all great.

Puush,

I have a suggestion. Remove to Black wire with white strip from the CDI connector and try starting the bike.

That removes the kill circuit wiring. No it will not blow up.
