I replaced just the white ones in the gauges and it was bright sun in driveway where I was working. So, I'll go with a definite "I dunno". I had to cup my hands over the gauges to see if they lit up at all.

Ah. Not what I meant.
I was wondering if you had installed LED light for the turn signal, high beam and neutral lights.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, I changed those out a long time ago. Amber for the turn signals, red for the oil light, blue for high beam, and green for neutral. Many times brighter than the stock bulbs.

New Mosfet VR ordered today. I bought the DIY kit from Roadstercycle. First kit on the page. http://www.roadstercycle.com/
It's shipped already, so probably in my sausage fingers on Friday. Just about an entire new electrical system on the CX after this.

Save me going back through 41 pages; were you using a stock VR up until now?

Yes. After busting my butt installing the the new, but apparently not needed, stator, the updated VR can't hurt. Especially since there isn't the load on the system there once was. The almost forty year old VR has been getting pretty warm of late, too.

Maybe this is an opportunity to mount the new VR in a more direct airflow path. Very cool that the old unit lasted that long.

I've wondered if lowering the electrical demand can damage the VR since the old type VR basically turns any unused power into heat. If the lights draw less power, the VR runs hotter.

I run a voltmeter so I can keep an eye on the charging system. Depending on ambient and operating temp, I'm between 13.7 and 14.5 volts. So, I'm still good but I'm not going to push my luck. Weld-The stock location under the left side cover is probably adequate. Other than mounting it on the front fender, I don't think I'll find a spot with better airflow. Or room.

The VR got here yesterday afternoon. The wiring looks to be a piece of cake but getting it mounted is going to take some thinking. And fabricating. It's just enough larger in all three dimensions that it won't fit the stock bracket. Those big plugs aren't helping, either.
Time to break out the plasma cutter and welder.

Can you mount it in front of the motor?

I thought about it but no room. Radiator.
There was some luck today, though. I cut and weld, weld and cut, did some grinding, and managed to shoehorn it in the stock location. Just need to wire it now. Everything came to an abrupt stop about 11AM, when I took Mrs. C to the ER with chest pain and a numb left arm. So far, they confirmed that she didn't have a heart attack but the ER doc had some concerns about her EKG and admitted her. She's been seen by a cardiologist, who will be doing a Stress/Echo test on her tomorrow. If she passes, she comes home. If she doesn't, well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I'm sorry to hear of your wife's medical problems. I will say a prayer for her.
