We plowed for 4 hours. 45 tractors covered about 15 acres.

Current project. Late 50s French made Ross bicycle.

Looking a heck of a lot better than it did when it followed me home.

Is that to replace the one you got hit on? Looking good. My Dad has a 3 speed he picked off the curb. An old schwinn. I really like riding it. (its flat in Southern Minnesota)

Nope. This is an n+1 project. (Where 'n' is how many[insert item here]you have and 1 is how many more[insert item here]you need.)
This is the replacement,

Build cost was 1.5 China bikes.

Can't beat those old Schwinns, especially if they are the old electroforged Chicago built ones. In a battle between a brick wall and an electroforged Schwinn, my money is on the Schwinn.

Bring that 3 speed up to Red Wing. www.3speedtour.com

That Ross has impressive tubing joints. They were real crafstmen, since robotic welding was a long way off.

No, Doc. Gunflint Trail seat bag made by Frost River in Duluth, MN. Kinda spendy but bulletproof.

All done with rattlecans.

Nice work. :P

In the past when I've painted bicycles with rattlecans I've used automotive paint. Just browse the Duplicolor aisle at the car parts store until I saw a color I liked.

That looks great! Fantastic job on the restoration but I have to ask, where the heck do you find parts for those old bikes? Ebay I'm guessing, but I have no idea?

Cheers,
Stew

First, dump shopping and dumpster diving. Drag home a beater and save all parts that are in decent shape or salvageable. Bikes from the forties to the early seventies used many of the same components.

Swap meets are the next choice. With a lot of people looking for the latest CF doodads, 'common' old parts can be had cheap. Rare is rare and expensive no matter what you deal in. A Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hub was made by the gazillions so are plentiful and cheap. A Sturmey ASC 3 speed fixed gear hub, on the other hand, will be at least three bills. More if it has all the bits. Atmospheric, if it is NOS and in the original box.

Garage sales come third, only because it's rare to come across parts. Complete bikes, on the other hand, are easy and usually cheap.

Ebay is my last choice. I have a self imposed spending limit of twenty bucks, including shipping, on ebay. So that limits me. I also like to physically hold what I'm buying. That said, the Ross that I'm working on now was an ebay purchase. It was a local pick up and was all of $11. I got more invested in paint.

Cables and such can still be had at the local bike shop.
